a change.” – Atticus Finch

yourself or someone else experience this.
"No matter what anybody says to you, don't let 'em get your goat. try fighting with your head for a change... its a good one, even if it does resist learning-Atticus Finch
ReplyDeleteI think this quote is very important and but hard to understand at a time but if you look the meaning to it,it will easy.Atticus is someone who opposed to violence as a way to settle dispute. I guess you can say he is a very positive person. He wants Scout to settle disputes the same way. Instead of using her fists she should settle them in a respectable manner and use her words and wits."Because I could never ask you to mind me again. Scout, simple by the nature of the work, every layer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally. This one's mine, I guess. You might hear some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don't you let 'em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change...it's a good one, even if it does resist learning."
This quote really confuses me. Even if he has his personal reasons of why he wants to do it. Wouldn't he risk nearly the whole town hating him for defending a black man? Is he doing this because he'll prove to the other people that he defended Tom Robinson for justice? He knows that he'll get his kids involve just like he already told Scout. Wouldn't he expect that his kids will disobey and really gets agitated to the people who talked to their father like that?.Never give up is the message Atticus is trying to send to Scout. You must fight for what you think is right. Atticus family have been defending An African American from the beginning with no chance of winning. It doesn't mean they should give up. If its the right thing to do then keep doing it. Maybe one day the hard work will pay off and they'll win a case. This quote is saying that whatever you do if it's at school or anywhere if anything happens don't get yourself down and don't hear what other people says.
“You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” – Atticus Finch. This is a quote from the recent book we were reading-"to kill a mockingbird". In my opinion I believe this means that whenever someone says something mean to you, you can't just beat them up you have to use your brain and think before doing things. Personally I think that it means violence doesn't solve anything so think before you do something and "kill them with kindness".
ReplyDeleteA time in my life when I have seen this quote be put into action was a few weeks ago. My brother is known to have some anger issues. When he was in school this kid kept taking his seat in homeroom so he politely asked him to get up everyday. When the kid didn't get up after like 2 weeks of sitting in my brothers assigned seat, my brother decided to flip the entire desk and chair over with the kid in it. Do I think he should have done this? No way. He could have told the teacher and used the brain he has, but instead he used violence.
Another time in my life when I've seen this quote put into action was in 6th grade. I was getting bullied by this kid and it wasn't making me feel good about myself. So after a few months I put up with it. I kept my head down and walked when I saw him and didn't talk in class thinking he would stop. When he didn't stop I told my mom and she was fed up. He talked to my teacher and figured out a better seating arrangement and made the boy stop teasing me for things I couldn't help. The good thing was I didn't just get angry and beat him up, I killed him with kindness.
The part in the quote where it says "don't let them get your goat" are words that play a major role in this quote. I believe it means that if you fight someone, then the other persons gonna know what their saying is getting in your mind. They like when you are upset because they are a bully and that's what bullies do. So since they like seeing you angry or upset they are going to tease you more for their pleasure. If you just ignore bullies and think before you do things the bullies not gonna know what they are saying is getting to you, Which may lead them to stop. Basically, it means don't let the bully get the satisfaction of knowing your hurt.
I think Atticus is a very smart man. Scout and Jem were lucky to have him as a father
Great job on your blog this week! I love your examples on how this quote relates to you personally. I agree with you about the "don't let them get your goat." That's one of the most important parts in this quote. "Kill them with kindness", is also very true. I thought the same thing. Again, great job on your blog this week. :)
Delete“You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” – Atticus Finch. This quote can mean so many things and relate to so many different people. I think this quote means that we all should have more confidence in ourselves and we can’t let anyone get to you. No matter what they try to do to get under your skin we should just let it go and move on. There is no reason for us to have to get physical with each other; we can talk about it instead of getting into a fight. I think Atticus says this because he is defending a black man, Tom Robinson. Everyone wants Tom to be put in jail because they think he raped Bob Youl’s daughter when he really didn’t. It turns out that they make him guilty anyway and he tries to run and they just kill him. Racism use to be such a big problem and it isn’t as bad today but it is still isn’t good. Everyone got into fights and started killing each other because of the color issue. “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down,” when Atticus says this I think he means we shouldn’t be taking our anger out onto each other physically, we should be using our mouths to talk not our fists because in reality it doesn’t do any good for you. This quote relates to my life in many ways. In school for instance, all you see if people getting into fights, not verbal, physical. Personally don’t think its appropriate for anyone to be getting into fist fights like that in school. Especially girls, yeah im a girl and if I mad at someone I’m going to want to maybe get physical but I personally think that we should especially in school, its trashy in my opinion. I see fights happen in the lunch room at school or in the hallway, and it’s not good because say you got suspended, it on your school record till you graduate. That won’t help you in the future at all, when you’re trying to get into college and they look at your record and they see you were known for getting into fight. In conclusion, I think this quote can relate to anyone, teenagers , adults anyone.
ReplyDeleteyour blog was great, I totally agree that you shouldn't let someone get you down. I also like how you related it to bob ule, his daughter and tom robinson. good job this week. keep up the good work.
DeleteA very wise and one of the most educated men in all of the book to kill a mocking bird has said in the book ““You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” – Atticus Finch. I think this quote means that no matter what people are saying you should always just ignore them, do not let it bother you because if you do let it bother you they are getting what they want, they want it to bother you. Do not fight about it because that is what the person saying stuff wants, you to get mad. To me, personally, this quote means that even if someone is talking smack you don’t punch them in the face you just feed off of that and you prove them wrong, speak with your actions. If someone is saying you suck at something do not get angry, just feed off that and stay humble, do the best that you can. For example some people might say that they are better than me and talk a bunch of crap so then im not on top of my game but I just do not listen and go out there and try my hardest. I feed off of what they are saying and instead of making me worse it makes me push myself harder and harder so I can prove who ever was telling me that stuff wrong. If you believe what they are saying they get what they want so no matter what you should not listen the the crap that they are saying. In my opinion you should just ignore what anyone says negative abut you. Just like if you get bullied. Just ignore it who cares what someone else thinks of you, its not there life its your life and there not living it you are. You should feed off of te bad things, they can only make you not only a better player at what you do but a better person. Do not worry about any thing someone says because what they say really does not even matter. You should not have to worry about what other people are saying, and you shouldn’t, just keep grinding and making yourself better
ReplyDeleteI agree with your blog this week. I liked how you explained yourself with various explanations to make your opinion clear. I also liked when you said that people should be worried about other people's lives because they are not living in it. Good job!
DeleteThis quote is an excerpt from the part of “To kill a Mocking Bird” when Atticus was talking to Scout about why he had taken on Tom Robinson’s case during a time when there was racial unrest. He explained to Scout that this was the right thing to do and that every lawyer gets a controversial case. That will cause a lot of publicity, and not always positive publicity. He warns Scout that most likely there will be name-calling about her family. Scout was a “scrapper” and often got in fights with the boys and Atticus knew she would probably get into more fights because of this. To “Hold your head high and your fists down” means to try not to react impulsively to the taunts she is going to hear.
ReplyDelete“Getting your goat” is a old-fashioned saying which meant not to let someone take your calm away, apparently goats were used in horse racing to keep the horses calm and in farming to keep it calm in the barn. In this quote, Atticus means that she should behave in a way that will not allow the others to realize that they are getting to you. And of course fighting with your head means... Think about the situation and how you should react in the most constructive and positive way.
This quote makes me think about bullying. Humans throughout history have bullied one another. Most bullying is rooted in fear. What we fear or don’t understand, we tend to fight. Often we become offended with what someone says because we are insecure ourselves and feel like we must respond with force. That isn’t always the best we have become more aware of the structure and reasons behind bullying and are learning about the best ways to defend and protect ourselves from the negative aspects, the result can sometimes make things worse. Try your best to ignore the bullying, keeping your head high, and not react, “keeping your fists down, and learn and think about the reasons behind the bullying, fight with your head, is the message of this quote.
One summer, I was bullied by a neighborhood boy. He would make comments to me as I rode by on my bike. He wanted so much to pick a fight with me. My parents advised me to not instigate a fight. All summer I continued to ride my bike in spite of his comments. I soon realized that the reason why he was bullying me was because he was jealous of my nice bike. So there was no reason to even consider fighting with him because it was his issue. He finally stopped because he didn’t get the fight that he wanted.
“You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” This is a quote said by a fictional character in To Kill a Mocking bird. It's a very wise quote. What I think this quote means to me is no matter what anyone says to you or what they do is just ignore it. They will keep on saying things until you make that mistake of hitting someone and bam you're now in trouble. You micht think fighting is the answer but it's not. It will just show you your weakness. This well make the person feel better about themselves and it will make them feel stronger than you. In To kill a Mocking Bird Atticus tells Scott not to fight people because of what they told her. At the time, Atticus was defending a black man and this was considered a bad thing. They would always tell Scott mean things and one time she faught a kid because she couldn't hold it. Then that's when Atticus told her to not fight anyone or he would be disappointed in her. The majority of the time people would say stupid things to people because they feel like the other person won't do anything. It will make them feel strong until you do something and then they will keep on saying things. They like to be the center of attention. But if you just listen to them and walk away they will just feel like complete idiots. Then, they will eventually stop bothering you. I can relate this to myself by the way I grew up. As a kid, people would make jokes about me because I'm Mexican. They would they say all these types of jokes that would be funny at first but soon get annoying. It also depends on who the person is that says these jokes. If it's my friend I normally know they are joking so I don't get mad or get the feeling of beating them up. Then if it's someone I don't like I'll say something back. Fighting also doesn't have to be with fist. You can fight with words too. Saying something back that's is mean shows that the other person has got you angry. I've seen people getting into fights because of what people say. Some are bad and some aren't as bad. Trying to sort things out and think smart when someone says something to you is a lot better then fighting over it. “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” This is a very well said quote by Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mocking Bird.
ReplyDeleteRigo, I really liked your blog this week. I lived how you explained it. I also liked how you related it to yourself. Great job this week. Keep up the good work!
DeleteIn the book “To Kill A Mockingbird” a wise man that goes by the name of Atticus Finch says the quote, “you just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” This quote could mean many things. However, to me, this quote means that you can never let someones words get to your feelings, no matter how harsh those words could possibly be. Personally, when he says “don’t you let ‘em get your goat” I think it means that you can not let the words hurt you, in any way. Also, to me this quote could mean that no matter how bad words can hurt you, physical violence can never really solve anything. Last, when Atticus says “try fighting with your head for a change,” I think he means that instead of using your fists and using physical violence to defend yourself, try to stand up for yourself by using words. Atticus is a positive person and does not believe in negative actions, which includes getting into fist fights, should be the answer to any problem. He is a man that will always fight for what he believes is the right thing.
ReplyDeleteSituations like this can be going on around you wherever you are and whenever you are there. A situation in my life that can relate to this quote is with my sister. My sister has a problem where she holds her problems in and does not really talk about it. Once it gets to her breaking point, she would start using physical violence and start punching things like walls. In my opinion, the best thing to do is talk about your problems so that you do not end up getting physically hurt. Another example of this quote is basically any time that you are stressed out. When you get stressed out, it usually does not just go away. Most of the time you have to talk to someone about your problem so that it does not get to the point where it is so bad that you start harming people or maybe even your self.
If you ever get bullied, the best thing to do is tell someone. the worst thing to do is ignore it. The thing that bullies want to do is annoy you until they can get a reaction out of you. That is what Atticus wants Scout to do, talk about her problems and not use physical violence to solve it.
I like your blog this week, and the explanation and also that physical fights are never the answer to solve a problem. Good job!
Delete“You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” – Atticus Finch. In, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus was one of the most inspiring characters in my opinion. He always acted the same, and always fought for what he believed in. Atticus always raised his kids just as he wanted even with his sisters doubt; his advice made them both better people. To me, this quote means to not fight, but you stand up for what you believe in. You should not turn to violence, but use your intelligence and mind instead. Kill them with all of your smarts instead of your strengths. Kill them with your mind because one day, somebody's going to be stronger than you and you'll never see it coming. I also believe that this quote means to never let words hurt you. In this book/movie, Scout needed a lot of help with that. Every single time somebody said something she didn't like, she wanted to fight them. Fighting however got her no where. Atticus told her many times to never let what anybody says about the Tom Robinson case bring her down. Most people in Maycomb weren't raised to like colored people, but Jem and Scout have extremely open minds for that time period. Everybody can relate to this quote, one way or another. In school, you may hear people talking about you and if you do; why fight them? That gets absolutely nothing solved, except proving that you could give or take a punch. It's the stupidest thing I've ever heard of, and that was Scout's bad habit. Towards the end of the book, Scout realized what Atticus meant by this quote. She got 100x better with the fighting, she used her minds and her words very wisely. No matter how she did it, she always stood up for her family and what she believed in. A man hurt Jem at the jailhouse, and she did everything she could to hurt him back. She may have used her fists at that point in time, but she still stood up for what she had believed in. Also, she made all of the men clear out, by telling Mr. Cunningham about going to school with his son. Most people would not, but I think she did that on purpose. This quote is not only extremely inspiring and from a wonderful book/movie, it's also extremely true. Use your mind and intelligence, not your strength.
ReplyDeleteWow great job with this quote. I like how you related it to the book. I also think atticus is a really inspiring character. He believe to do the right thing. Good job and can't wait to read yours next time
ReplyDeleteIn the book "To Kill A Mockingbird" Atticus says "You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don't you let 'em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change." I think this quote means that if someone is being mean to you through words, then you shouldn't be mean back. That is what gives them power so you can't stoop to their level. You can not use physical violence if they are only using verbal violence. Never be the first one to hit. The part of this quote that says "don't you let 'em get your goat" means that when you can't let them steal who you really are and try to make you change. They can do this buy enraging your anger and making you hit back. "Hold your head high" means to be proud of who you are. Atticus wanted Scout to be proud of what he was doing because he was doing the right thing, and there is nothing wrong with that. Scout seemed to want to fight anyone who said something bad about her father, but that doesn't get you anywhere. The quote "You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don't you let 'em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change" can relate to my life in many ways. One way is from when I was younger. I got picked on a lot at school and I didn't have a lot of friends. Sometimes I was so mad when bullies picked on me that I just wanted to hit them to teach them a lesson, but I never did. I didn't do it because my parents always taught me to never be the first one to hit. It doesn't make you look any better than the bully. Any time I got picked on my mom told me to not hit them unless they hit first. You need to be able to control you're anger against them. In conclusion, I think the quote, "You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don't let 'em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change" is a very true and incredible quote. I hope everyone can learn something from it.
