  1. The quote “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change,” by Atticus Finch. In "To Kill a Mockingbird" Atticus said this to Scout because she was getting into fights. These fights were started because children were making fun of Atticus. They did this because of their parents gossiping about Atticus, a lawyer, defending Tom Robinson, an African American. That was a problem because of the era and social views of a small town in 1940's Alabama. To me this quote means to not let people's words to affect how you feel, and instead try and use words to solve problems and not fall back to violence. Personally, I like this quote and it's meaning. If this was followed in everyday life then a lot of problems and unwanted emotions would be avoided. You can afflict emotional trauma, Mental trauma, and physical trauma to people by hitting them. That emotional and mental trauma can last for years. Physical trauma can last forever, as scars. deformities and in extreme cases disabilities.

This reminds me of the time I had to get counseling because I for my anger problems. In elementary school I got into a lot of fights because of my short temper. I was very much like Scout in the fact that when someone offended me, my family, or my friends, I got mad and tried to hurt them. If I had followed this quote and it's meaning I would have avoided a lot of trouble and hurting people's feelings. My counselor helped me a lot and taught me how to express myself though other means like talking, drawing and exercise. This quote means a lot to me, and I will try to remember it always.

    2. I understand how you interpreted this quote and explained it in your own words. By giving examples from the book its telling you how you can interpret what was going on and put a good example for this quote. I think it is great you can control your temper we all have short tempers at time! But you found good ways to calm down with that temper. Good job telling what you thought and giving a truthful example from your own life!

  2. I think this means is that vilance should only be used as a last resort instead try to be friend your enemys or just talk them out of a fight. Your true wepon is your words and your mind use your words as a wepon try to use them to stop your enemy from harming you others and them self without useing force. Vilance only makes madders worse because you can hurt another person or you can get hurt but in the end you both get in trouble no matter who started it or who swung first you were both wrong and two wrongs dont make a write. Vilance and fighting only brings you to there level and that makes you as wrong as they are and dosnt make you any better. When you fight them or show agretion twords them is just what they want and that just fules them and makes the situation worse. Most of the time your enemys are only jelious of you and what you have and what you have accomplished. The only really good thing to do is just ignore all there tawnts and what they say about you it dosent matter because they just dont know the real you and what you go through so what they say just shouldnt matter to you because they havent seen things from your point of view and they havent walked around in your shoes. Some people wear just born to pick on people like us and god put them on this earth to test our self confidence and courage. Thats why god put people on the earth that are the most pure hearted people and will help you with anything and everything and will always be there for you like my best friend Tyler he is the nicest and funnist person on earth and he is always there for me. Vilance could take that away so why risk it so use your words not your fists.

    2. I agree with you Jacob. I think it does mean that violence should always be the "last resort." I also agree maybe you should try to talk someone out of fighting you. I also thing violence only makes madders worse. Violence leads to more Violence. Good job Jacob!

  3. In To Kill A Mockingbird, the book we are currently reading Atticus says something that shows his integrity. This very brief statement can tell us much about Atticus and his outlooks on other people's opinions. He says “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” I think personally what he is trying to say is don't let other peoples opinions get to you. Thats what they think, they have different opinions and choice of words to say then you or someone else. If that person thinks you are doing something wrong or not right, and start judging you. Do not let them see that you care, you have your own morales and not to fight them physically for what they say. Show them that what they said to is not considered anywhere in your mind, that you don't care about the things they say. Keep your head high and don't let them get you down. I think by Atticus saying this especially in the time this book was going on shows his character truly shines through. He defended Tom Robinson because he knew that the guy was innocent. Despite what all those people kept saying about him he kept sticking to the morales he believes in. I think everyone should think like that not to care what other people think, i’ve learned to do that. I'm so much happier now that i don't let other people’s words get to me. In my own life with moving up to the High School you can’t go into the school worrying if you will fit in or not. Personally I don't care about fitting in because its not all it cracked up to be. There is a lot of judgement that comes with trying to fit in and me personally not caring what people think, makes me feel that fitting in isn't all that important. Im in high school for a education and yeah we make friends, lose friends. Its just typical High School and everyone’s been through it. Everyone has gotten judged but what people need to understand that being judged shouldn't matter. Like the people can judge or make fun of you for a certain thing, you take that don't care about it. But, turn that into motivation to be better.

    1. I agree with your blog Brenna because I agree that the main focus, or one of them is to not let other peoples opinions get to you. I also agree that if you’re doing something that other people are not and if they are citizens you for that you don’t have to listen to them. You can have your own beliefs. In the book, the town’s people are judging Atticus and even his kids because Atticus is defending a black man (Tom Robinson). Scout Atticus’s daughter, gets in a lot of fights, but Atticus tells her not to fight, especially for him. I agree with your example about High School. I agree that you should go in to school worrying about fitting in. you say that you don’t think people need it fit in and I agree, because the school wouldn’t be interesting if we were all the same. And if we were all trying to fit in we couldn’t be ourselves and many would be miserable. I believe that if people looked at you with hate or disapproval, you do not need to fight about it. You need to accept it and be the best person you can be.

  4. I think the quote “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” by Atticus Finch means to use your head instead of your fists and don't let other people get the better of you. He also says to maybe use your cleverness instead of fighting all time. It means to fight back but to fight without using your fists and using your cleverness or your head. An example of this quote could be is that your in the park and a person starts picking on you. You could hit them with your fists and start a fight or you can do something clever and unexpected that might get the person to stop bothering you or you can even turn the tables and make the kid look stupid for picking on you. Another Example of this quote is you can be a basketball player and your not that good at it and the one of your teammates push you to the ground and they say your bad at the game. Instead of pushing back you get back up and continue to play the game. Then you go back to practicing and you become very good until your even better then the person who pushed you down and you eventually even become the best on the team. A final example which comes from the book we were reading in class and the book we get the quote above from "How To Kill A Mocking Bird." The example is in school there is a kid who is making fun of your father for doing something other people in your society do not agree with. Instead of fighting that person you ignore that person and move on even though you know your going to be called a wimp for not fighting that person. A time when I can relate this quote to my life was when I was around Eleven or so and there was a kid who was always was extremely mean to me and almost everyone he talked to. One day this kid pushed me and I got back up stared him down and walked away. The next day he was trying to copy off me on a test because I had the "joy and honor" of sitting right next to him. So, what I did was to get my revenge is purposely but wrong answers and I made sure the kid could see it and when I finished he walked up to the teacher and handed in his paper. I erased all the answers and I put the right ones on there. The kid ended up having to redo the whole entire paper because he ended up getting a grand ol 0 on the test and he even got extra problems and he had to do it after school hours so he had to stay after. I ended up getting a 96 on test. So all I am saying is I think I got my revenge without fighting.

  6. In to kill a mockingbird, Atticus said “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” what I think he means when he said that is that you shouldn't care about what others think about your opinion. that's your opinion and you can think what you want. you cant let others tell you that your opinion is bad. that's your not theirs so don't be mad or upset because they don't like your thoughts. and what Atticus says fight with your fist down means to fight with words. fighting with words is probably the best thing to do because it wont get you in trouble and words cant be more effective then physical fighting. Actually fighting can make things worse and its not necessary. hold your head high means to just keep looking straight don't look for ways to get out of the situation you either give up or you stay and finish what you started and you win. holding your head high is the best thing tov do because once you put your head down you have the feeling that your wrong or that you failed at something keeping your head high is tough because you worry about a lot of thing that you don't want. and life is hard to get through a lot. but that's life is an obstacle. and getting through that obstacle its though but it will help you out a lot . I will teach you hpow determine you are that once you quit you will redo it again.

    1. I agree with you that you have to be strong and keep your head high . It shows if your a stronger person or nott because sometimes you need to let things go and not care about what other people say or do. For example how atticus didn't care what people said about him. Good job tony

  7. “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t let them get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change think of what you’re going to say before flinging your fists around.” Atticus Finch. In this quote Atticus is telling his daughter not to resort to violence to solve problems. He is encouraging all of us to stay cool and use our words and our intelligence to fight battles and not our fists. Unless you are in a life or death situation, through violence. Minds cannot be opened and ideas cannot be exchanged while we are engaged in a physical fight. Using words to compose a solid argument will gave the other side something to think about. Violence just hurts everyone. In a way this quote applies to the struggle for racial equality and understanding that was a major theme of “Mocking bird”. Some leaders of any major cause always argue for violence and fighting force with force. But successful movements, like the struggle for race equality, women’s rights, or the independence of India always involve peaceful protest and resistance. Today we are still seeing the battle between the use of force and peaceful negotiation in our own country as we watch the violence in Ferguson Missouri. Some people say that there are those who are encouraging ongoing violence in this city. However actions to protest the same issue like those peaceful ones in New York are probably creating more awareness and understanding than the violence of Ferguson. Atticus Finch himself tried to set an example for his children and others by using his skills as an attorney rather than participating in narrow minded violence. Yet he also showed a willingness to use force when people were threatened, as was the care with the dog with rabies, this quote, like the entire novel, is an argument to use intelligence, words and negotiation rather than predigudice and violence when conflict arises. Although it is often a much harder choice, this is usually a more successful one, and one I can support.

  8. “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” – Atticus Finch. This quote is a great quote from to kill a mockingbird. What i think this means is that if others want to fight you just dont let it bother you. Be yourself. You must let them do what they want to do and not let it bother you. If they see that it bothers you they will continue to do it.

  9. “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” This is a quote said by a fictional character in To Kill a Mocking bird. It's a very wise quote. What I think this quote means to me is no matter what anyone says to you or what they do is just ignore it. They will keep on saying things until you make that mistake of hitting someone and bam you're now in trouble. You micht think fighting is the answer but it's not. It will just show you your weakness. This well make the person feel better about themselves and it will make them feel stronger than you. In To kill a Mocking Bird Atticus tells Scott not to fight people because of what they told her. At the time, Atticus was defending a black man and this was considered a bad thing. They would always tell Scott mean things and one time she faught a kid because she couldn't hold it. Then that's when Atticus told her to not fight anyone or he would be disappointed in her. The majority of the time people would say stupid things to people because they feel like the other person won't do anything. It will make them feel strong until you do something and then they will keep on saying things. They like to be the center of attention. But if you just listen to them and walk away they will just feel like complete idiots. Then, they will eventually stop bothering you. I can relate this to myself by the way I grew up. As a kid, people would make jokes about me because I'm Mexican. They would they say all these types of jokes that would be funny at first but soon get annoying. It also depends on who the person is that says these jokes. If it's my friend I normally know they are joking so I don't get mad or get the feeling of beating them up. Then if it's someone I don't like I'll say something back. Fighting also doesn't have to be with fist. You can fight with words too. Saying something back that's is mean shows that the other person has got you angry. I've seen people getting into fights because of what people say. Some are bad and some aren't as bad. Trying to sort things out and think smart when someone says something to you is a lot better then fighting over it. “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” This is a very well said quote by Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mocking Bird. Thank you for all the support and have a great day.

It is always better to avoid violence so then you avoid getting in trouble or even worse. I can relate this in the real world because i have been in a lot of fights in my life and now i realize that violance shouldnt be the answer to fight back about something. A example i have seen is fro, a book and movie called to kill a mocking bird because atticus never fought with violance but he did fight back for what is right. this is what i think about the quote - “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” – Atticus Finch.

  12. “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” – Atticus Finch This quote that atticus finch had once said is very smart, kind, and very very very useful back in the day when racism was going around. In the book to kill a mocking bird. Atticus finch was a lawyer. And back in that time black people were segregated. and whites hated them. Atticus didn't care, atticus wanted to help this one particular black person. His name was tom robinson. He was accussed of rapping this one girl. For obvious reasons he was innocent but back in the day anyone will believe white people over black people anyday. So he was found guilty. But atticus said this quote because he has two children at home. Jem and scout. The were young so they didn't understand the concept of blacks and whites. And the kids in school used to tease them that their dad is a nigger lover. At the time they thought helping blacks was a good thing so they really thought that they were just making fun of their father. So they used to physically fight back and atticus would tell them the quote wee are talking about. Atticus is a very calm guy. He doesn't like to settle things with violence. So he tells jem and scout so not fight back. Fighting is never the answer. But the kids wont understand that. This can relate to me in a lot of ways. I remember in 8th grade I was on this cheer team. It sucked the coach was horrible and I had to quit. I couldn't sit another practice with those terrible people anymore. After I quit they all started to act immature, including my 19 year old coach started to tweet about me. As immature as it sounds I wanted to fight back. Bu then I realized it doesn't do any good to fight with a immature 19 year old that should be in collage not tweeting about 13 year olds.... My mom told me fighting back is not the answer. As much as I wanted to fight back I realized I was the bigger person even though I was 6 years younger then her.

  13. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, one of the main characters stated,"You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” The meaning of this quote has a variations. Personally, I think it means to forbid anyone from sucessfully and fully making you angry and to ignore them and not let other people get into your own physce. To hold pride in yourself no matter whats going on and what people say. For example, in the book To Kill a Mocking Bird, Attitcus Finch a level-headed character does something impracticable by defending a African American. The rest of the small southern town find this ostentatious. Most of the racist community continue to take out their oppinon out on his children. Other children start to harass them saying their father was a "nigger-lover". To prevent his children from getting into fights with the other kids he states the following quote. Its important not to let other people, whether it a single person or the majority of society. You have to hold your head high and have pride in yourself and your life rather than try to physically fight. Physcially fighting will not change anything in my opinion. You have to hold your head high and ignore all the negative fedback and in the end that will define the type of person you are. As I stated earlier the quote from To Kill a Mockingbird is a life lesson we all go through at one point or another. When I first learned that I had to hold my head high and keep my fists down I was about the same age as the main character Scout. I was only 7 and everyone was making fun of me because I was poor. It was quite obvious`because we didnt have a car and I hardly brought in any food and couldnt buy food and the neightbourhood kids would gossip about how "uncared" for my house was and how my mother was tired and old. I would get mad and get on top of them and beat their asses. Then as I started growing up and the boys were getting stronger they would easily pin me down and win the fight. I understood that physically fighting them was pointless and in this case so was verbally fighting with a bunch of kids that couldnt understand the reailty of the world yet. Simply I stopped fighting or even looking back .

  15. This quote “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” – Atticus Finch from tkm (to kill a mocking bird) means keep your head up high and don't fight no matter what anyone say just ignore it and don't let it get to you. use your head and know when its time to fight and when it not time to fight. Basically just know the right time to do something but try to leave violence out of it. I think a good example would be right before i got my shoulder surgery. People would push my shoulder just to mess with me and i would fight back but if someone just said something i would simply say something right back then walk away. I'm not saying be walked all over, that's the last thing i would say because when i see that i need to put a stop to it immediately if i know the person. People shouldn't just let people walk all over them they should get what they deserve to a certain extent. You have to know where to draw the line, that's something i struggled with for a long time but i think i finally got it and since i did, things have been a lot smoother. So i guess what im trying to say is do what you half to do but don't get carried away. Do minimum and let carma do the rest.

  16. "You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybodys says to you, dont let em get to your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change." - Atticus Finch. To me this quote means no matter how much someone bullies you....dont start a actual fist fight. Instead, kill them with words. Humilate the person, tell them the truth about themselves. Get them so badly that they become speechless and everyone laughs at them. I love to do this to people because they get embaressed and will likely not want to mess around with you ever again. It personally means to me kill a persons words with your voice. Speak up and dont let that person boss you around. Show them who truely is the idiot. This happened in my life once in class. A kid was making fun of me and he told me i was weak. Than i told him to fight me and ill show you who is weak. Next, he said nevermind and went back to working. I only brought up fighting to intimidate him, because i knew i would scare him that way. He didnt speak for the rest of the day and people laughed at him. He got what he deserved in my opinion. People later congratulated me for sticking up for myself...because this kid was apparently the coolest or something. You have to handle the situation without a fist fight it can happen trust me..and that is exactly what I did in this here situation.

  17. The quote Atticus said in the book "to kill a mockingbird" “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” this quote means to fight with peace and pride. some other people who won arguments like that are Martian Luther King Jr. and Gandhi. they mastered the tactic of civil disobedience. the other part of the quote "try fighting with your head for a change" means to try and outsmart the person and to just solve things out peacefully instead of turning it into a big brawl. Atticus is good at keeping his cool because he is a lawyer, he can keep his poker face straight while thinking of small loopholes to outsmart the other person. in the book Atticus was spat on by Bob
Ewelles and by comparing the size to the two me Atticus could kick Bobs butt, but Atticus kept his cool knowing that he was the bigger man while making Bob even more furious than he was before. Then next part of the quote "don't let em' get to your goat" means don't let them get to your head. Getting in someone's head is a tactic used for a lot of competitive things. like sports. of you get in their head it can make them go crazy and make them loose motivation and give up. it happens in every sport. it can also happen in other things that aren't so sporty like chess or a spelling bee or even something like a court case. atticus is basically getting in Bob Ewelles head by just staying calm to his acts of hate. Bob was trying to get in atticus' head by being very offensive and calling him and his family mean and very offensive names But atticus outsmarted the big drinker Bob and his family and made them look like fools. the quote was really meant for Jem and Scout to stop scout from fighting other people in school because they called her or atticus a name and it worked.

  18. “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” – Atticus Finch. What he means is that you should stop fighting physically. Don’t use your fists use your brain. Use your mouth to stand up for yourself do not get into fights. If you disagree with something say it don’t go and pick a fight with someone. In the book Atticus says this to his daughter scout. She is always getting into trouble picking fights. She is getting too old to be fighting kids every time they say something she does not like. So he tells her to use her mouth to say how she feels not her fists. He doesn’t want his children to be good children and good citizens of Maycomb. So if your someone who wants to fight use your words instead control yourself and stay out of trouble. This is what I think the quote means.
This relates to me because my sister will fight me if I look at her wrong. She thinks that fighting me will make her get her way. She starts a fight instead of saying what she feels. It works for her because I end up pushing her away and I get in trouble. It’s crazy that she can pull this stuff off. She fights a lot like scout not in school but with me she hates me. I don’t know what I did but she likes to pick fights with me just like scout picks fights with kids at school. Also a lot of people in our school yelled at each other and that was it they wouldn’t get suspended. They fight over stupid stuff and end up being friends again so what’s the point of fighting. Why would you hit your friend and start a fight if you’re going to get in trouble and be friends when your suspended Fights like that make no sense and happen all the time it’s so stupid. This quote is really hard to write 4oo words on but people should use words instead of violence because it always ends badly for them. I agree with Atticus on this quote nothing god comes from fighting this is how this quote relates to my life and our school.
