“You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No
matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for
a change.” – Atticus Finch
*What do you think this quote means? What does it mean to
you personally?
*Give an example from your own life when you have seen
yourself or someone else experience this.
“You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” – Atticus Finch. I think that Atticus is trying to say that you can also fight with your words and you do not always have to be violent. I think this quote means that fighting is bad and, you can win a fight without having to be violent. I also think this quote means that fighting somebody you do not like will make you not like them even more and, it will not resolve what you are fighting over. If you have a conversation about the problem you will eventually be able to find a solution and understand each other better. If you keep your head up and your fists down the only option you will have is to talk about it and you will not have to fight. If you fight with your head you will win the fight. Fighting with you fists will make you angrier. Personally this quote means that if I fail at something I cannot blame other people. I failed because I did something wrong, I am not allowed to make it somebody else’s fault. I can only be mad at myself. When I don’t get my best throw at track I cannot hold a grudge towards other people, I just have to better myself until I can set a higher personal record. If I disagree with something my sister says I cannot just start fighting her. We should be able to talk about it and, come to an equal point where we both agree. If I do not do something and I fail I have to blame myself for not working hard enough. I am not going to blame my coach for not training me hard enough for the event. If I am trying to reach a goal and it is easy to reach it is not a goal. If I cannot reach my goals I will not fight with other people telling them they should have trained me harder, I am going to keep pushing myself until I break through my goals so I can set them higher. “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” – Atticus Finch.
ReplyDeleteI agree with molly because she gives great examples, Also I agree with her because she explains the quote good and you can tell that she knows what the quote means.
DeleteWhat Atticus Finch meant by “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change”, meant that don’t just go in somewhere without thinking twice. When it comes to assuming things and are too quick to judge, it can have its consequences like can affect poor decision making. Your actions can cause an affect so when I am about to make a choice I think about all the possibilities that could happen from any action I might use. Some people may think to themselves that violence is the only way of solving things and should settle it man verse man. I am not sure what they could hope to accomplish from this but there were many other options they could have chosen from. One example that I can compare this quote to is in the book To Kill a Mockingbird. There was one scene in the book and movie where Scout gets in trouble with the teacher because Scout tried to explain to the teacher that Walter Cunningham didn’t have much and they won’t take something that they can’t be paid back in return. The teacher was confused and took out her stress on Scout and now Scout is mad at Walter because she thinks that Walter is the reason why she got in trouble with the teacher. Right when Recess begins, Scout tries to find Walter Cunningham and tackle him into the ground so that he can’t move and she could try to get punches on Walter. Scout had no other thought in her mind except to get revenge on Walter for getting her in trouble when in reality it’s not his fault at all. She made the wrong choice instead of looking at what she could have done from many other angles to see if it would make a difference to the outcome. Atticus was trying to say that there is a better way of handling situations that having to rise up the fists and cause a fight of the century, that right there was a reference to WWE as a joke. Atticus was explaining that there’s an easier way for everything and they don’t always have to be so violet. In life we have the right choice, the wrong choice, the easy choice, and the wrong choice. We have many decisions in life and we might make mistakes in the past but they can change if you let yourself. To make the right and easy choices we must look at it from many angles to see different outcomes that can affect the future.
ReplyDeleteIn the novel To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus Finch said "You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.”
ReplyDeleteWhat I think this quote means is that instead if physically fighting someone, just try ignoring them or to use our words. This quote can greatly relate to my life. It can relate because my one friend has a boyfriend, and we don't like each other. Every time I would see them together he would always say some really rude comment about me and as much as I would like to fight him for saying it, I need to use my head because if I fought him, I would be in a ton of trouble with the school. I would probably get suspended and my friend would hate me too. When I feel like fighting him, I would use my words instead. This could happen to many people. Many people tend to use their fists more than their heads, and when this happens it usually leads to a bad result. A lot of people that do this get suspended or even criminal records too. Sometimes it better to use our heads then to use our fists because in certain situations it would be smarter for us to talk out way out of a fight with our heads the. to use our fists and fight people.
I agree with you because if you want to fight someone you can get into a lot of trouble to the point that you could get suspended. Not only that if you did fought him your friend would've been mad at you. That's why we use words because the result wouldn't end up being a suspension. And your friend wouldn't be upset with you.
DeleteThe quote “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” Said by Atticus Finch in the book, “To Kill a Mockingbird” was told to Scout, Atticus’s daughter, to keep her from fighting kids that made fun of her dad for protecting a black man in a court. What this quote was meant in the story was that, don’t fight people with your fist but argue with them with your speech. A good example of this is in the world to day with North Korea and the US. We are consulting a resolution with out fighting to the conflict of the dictator of North Korea from harming him and his people. What I thought what the quote meant was what it meant in the book. Also this is the more effective way to solve a problem. If someone has a issue and try’s to fight you physically try not to. Because it wont look on either of your parts. And this might solve the problem between you two. Look at some bands and rappers they have a lot of hate between them, mostly rappers, but there is one band called Acacia Strain that has beef with another band called Emmure because Emmure thought that Acacia made a song saying that Emmure “took” there style of music. And Acacia didn’t mean to be towards that band and Acacia then something like “So that’s mean you did steal some of our rifts and style” and that didn’t and very well so months they play a tour together and the vocalist from Emmure try’s beating up the vocalist from acacia with brass knuckles but the vocalist of acacia still beats the living light out of him. And to this day they still hate each other AND they play tours together! So that’s just proves how fighting physically does not solve anything. Also another thing is that argue like this are lawyers. They argue for things that they know that are wrong and sometimes win from how good they are at arguing. And know who was a lawyer in the story “to kill a mockingbird”? Atticus Finch was the man and he also said the quote, “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” Finally if you think about the world this is the most and fastest way to get things done which is messed up. Maybe someday when we are 80 years old or dead from old age or what ever the world would figure out that this is the best way to live and fight.
ReplyDelete“You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” Once said by Atticus Finch, the fictional character from To Kill A Mockingbird. I think this means that violence is never the answer and I totally agree with Atticus. If you want to resolve a situation it’s better to fight with words rather than your fist. When you fight you get you anger out but the situation doesn’t just end after a fight, especially now a days you can’t really get into a fight without a teacher or the cops breaking it up. And in a fight you can’t always win and even if you do you will still probably have a couple bruises and no one really wants those. Now I’m not saying if you use word you will win that kind of fight every time but at least you won’t have bruises all over your body. Also if you use your mind you can use things against them and you annoy them and they start messing up what they want to say.
ReplyDeleteThis quote is very relatable for me because you can relate to this really easily when you are in high school. Every day you hear at least one person say, I’ll fight her or him. They are just all talk though because they never do it. I know a girl who always does that, but she only says that cause she isn’t good at coming up with something to say on the spot. Cause like when we get mad at someone you just want to punch them and cause them pain, but you can’t just go around beating people up because sooner or later you’ll get in trouble or even worst get beaten up yourself. You have to be smart about it and you know you are smart when you start saying those things that make the whole class or ooooohhhhh. But it’s a lot better to use your words then be sent to the principles. Its better to use your mind than hands and cause violence. You also get your point across a lot better when you actually use words because no one is going to know why you fight, they are just going to be crowned around you yelling fight a thousand times
I agree with you on your opinion Kenny, there is an easier way to approach something than fighting and even if you do start fighting it doesn't just end there. In high school you could over hear people say that they want to fight him or her. Sometimes they just say they will but they never do it and forget about it. Instead of using fist fighting you need to be wise about the things that you say that will make you have the upper advantage in the conversation. If you use your brain to use words instead of fighting you can turn their own words against them. Even if you do get in a fight, you'll still get punished one way or another. In Central, if they catch you fighting someone anywhere on the school property during school hours you will get suspended and so will the other antagonist. I would say that i agree with Kenny a hundred percent on his opinion of this week's quote.
Delete"You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don't you let 'em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change." This quote was made by Atticus Finch, From to kill a mockingbird. I think this quote means that if you ever get into a fight and you want to hit that person, I think Atticus is trying to say instead of hitting that person talk to that person. Because if you fight with that specific person you can get into trouble. Weather its by the school, your and that persons parents. If you ever get into a fight just use words because if your involve with sports and you fight you can get kicked off the team. That's what I think Atticus meant by that quote. This quote relates to me personally because A lot of people fight throughout my life that's what most people see. I remember I got into a fight when I was a kid. I hit him and the cause of that our friendship was gone. We both ended up apologizing and became friends again. This quote relates to a show because this guys best friend kept a huge secret from him and he called him a murder. His best friend died and he thinks he died think his friend as a killer. Instead of killing people for the things they did, he threatens them to stop what their doing and hand them in to the police. He does to dishonor his friend.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Ishmael. If we play a sport or are in a club and we get into a fight with them, we could get kicked off of the team and get in a ton of trouble. Also, it would be better for us to use our words so we won't get in as much trouble as we would if we fought them.

ReplyDeleteIn the book ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ Atticus Finch is a man that has many morals and follows those morals. He once said “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” This quote means that no matter what anyone says don't fight them physically, but keep it to yourself and fight with your head. If someone says something that makes you angry or upset, you shouldn't let anything get to you personally. Because most of the things people say they don't mean to get to your personally. BUt you take them to be. Personally this quote means to me that don't fight anyone if someone makes you mad, but just use your thoughts and don't show the other people that something is getting to you, thats just what they want. They want to get you upset and mad.
I can relate his quote to times in my life. But one particular time was in school. I have this friend that has short hair. And these group of kids thought it would be funny to goof on her saying she looks like their friend. We were in drama so while we were on stage one guy from the group took a picture while they were standing next to eachother. She saw but didn't let it get ot her. Yes she was very upset and did cry after but she didn't let them see. She kept her head high in front of them. And thats all that matters. In conclusion, Atticus Finch once said
“You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” And that this quote means that you shouldnt ever let anything get to you.
A very wise and one of the most educated men in all of the book to kill a mocking bird has said in the book ““You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” – Atticus Finch. I think this quote means that no matter what people are saying you should always just ignore them, do not let it bother you because if you do let it bother you they are getting what they want, they want it to bother you. Do not fight about it because that is what the person saying stuff wants, you to get mad. To me, personally, this quote means that even if someone is talking smack you don’t punch them in the face you just feed off of that and you prove them wrong, speak with your actions. If someone is saying you suck at something do not get angry, just feed off that and stay humble, do the best that you can. For example some people might say that they are better than me and talk a bunch of crap so then im not on top of my game but I just do not listen and go out there and try my hardest. I feed off of what they are saying and instead of making me worse it makes me push myself harder and harder so I can prove who ever was telling me that stuff wrong. If you believe what they are saying they get what they want so no matter what you should not listen the the crap that they are saying. In my opinion you should just ignore what anyone says negative abut you. Just like if you get bullied. Just ignore it who cares what someone else thinks of you, its not there life its your life and there not living it you are. You should feed off of te bad things, they can only make you not only a better player at what you do but a better person. Do not worry about any thing someone says because what they say really does not even matter. You should not have to worry about what other people are saying, and you shouldn’t, just keep grinding and making yourself better
ReplyDelete"No matter what anybody says to you, don't let 'em get your goat. try fighting with your head for a change... its a good one, even if it does resist learning-Atticus Finch
ReplyDeleteI think this quote is very important and but hard to understand at a time but if you look the meaning to it,it will easy.Atticus is someone who opposed to violence as a way to settle dispute. I guess you can say he is a very positive person. He wants Scout to settle disputes the same way. Instead of using her fists she should settle them in a respectable manner and use her words and wits."Because I could never ask you to mind me again. Scout, simple by the nature of the work, every layer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally. This one's mine, I guess. You might hear some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don't you let 'em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change...it's a good one, even if it does resist learning."
This quote really confuses me. Even if he has his personal reasons of why he wants to do it. Wouldn't he risk nearly the whole town hating him for defending a black man? Is he doing this because he'll prove to the other people that he defended Tom Robinson for justice? He knows that he'll get his kids involve just like he already told Scout. Wouldn't he expect that his kids will disobey and really gets agitated to the people who talked to their father like that?.Never give up is the message Atticus is trying to send to Scout. You must fight for what you think is right. Atticus family have been defending An African American from the beginning with no chance of winning. It doesn't mean they should give up. If its the right thing to do then keep doing it. Maybe one day the hard work will pay off and they'll win a case. This quote is saying that whatever you do if it's at school or anywhere if anything happens don't get yourself down and don't hear what other people says.
Atticus Finch once said “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.”
ReplyDeleteWhat I think this quote means is that when you're getting bullied or someone is picking on you, you need to stick up for yourself. You also need to think about what you should do. Fighting isn't good and you can do something better than fighting with someone. There is always people to talk to you that would listen if you're getting bullied. That's what I would do. You never want to throw fists! Fighting with your head is when you think about what to say to the person. For example when you say knock it off or stop bullying me! Sometimes things are tough and you feel like you cant do anything about it but you can and there will always be at least one person to help you. Even if you're not friends with people around you who are watching they should at least say stop.
I can relate to this quote because I used to get bullied. I didn't know what to do and I was scared to stick up for myself. I didn't fight anyone, I just let it go. Then one day this girl wanted to talk bad about e so I went up to her and I just told her how I felt and that she should knock it off and that if she doesn't want anyone talking about her she should talk about anyone else. Also I have had some friends who were getting bullied and I would stick up for them telling them to not bully her. All you have to do is think and you'll be good. But you also have to watch what you say. If you speak carefully you may not get in trouble as much as curing someone off. You're also the higher then the person talking bad about you. if you're just letting it go and not getting in trouble that's good!
I Agree with You Because You Used a Lot of Details.
Delete“You Just Hold Your Head High and Keep Those Fists Down. No Matter What Anybody Says to You, Don’t You Let ‘Em Get Your Goat. Try Fighting with Your Head for a Change.” – Atticus Finch . Fighting Is Never Goanna Solve Anything When You Think About It Has This Ever Affected the Way Somebody Feel Sad About Anther Person After They Fight They Still Hate Them. Wouldn't You Be Happy That If You Stopped Hating That Person. When They Say Fight with Your Heads for a Change. Atticus Represents Morality and Reason in to Kill a Mockingbird. as a Character, Atticus Is Even-Handed Throughout the Story. He Is One of the Very Few Characters Who Never Has to Rethink His Position on an Issue. Atticus Believes in Justice and the Justice System. He Doesn't Like Criminal Law, Yet He Accepts the Appointment to Tom Robinson's Case. He Knows Before He Begins That He's Going to Lose This Case, but That Doesn't Stop Him from Giving Tom the Strongest Defense He Possibly Can. This Is Why He Always Fights with His Head , He Uses His Head . Atticus Reserves That Distinction for Those People Who Unfairly Exploit Others. He Patiently Recognizes That They Are Children and That They Will Make Childish Mistakes and Assumptions. Ironically, Atticus' One Insecurity Seems to Be in the Child-Rearing Department, and He Often Defends His Ideas About Raising Children to Those More Experienced and More Traditional. as You Can Tell He Teaches His Kids the Right Way to Grow Up and Treat Others .What Do You Think ?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you cause you have a lot of details
DeleteFighting doesn't do anything for us we don't even feel fulfilled after words yeah we feel happy that we hurt someone else so we take our anger out but we are still filled with this pit in our stomach where we still feel hurt. Everything you have said makes total sense and I agree with you.
DeleteI agree with your analysis to this quote. Violence is never the answer. So what if you fight, you will still hate each other after.
Delete“You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” – Atticus Finch
ReplyDeletefighting is never gonna solve anything , or help any matter. if you think it thru you notice you still have the same hatered for someone or even more . sometimes its hard too help and prevent your self from hating them cause they don't stop . aand I completely understand that just try anf think too your self things will get better. a lot of the time if you let go of the sitition it will move and you would notice that you don't even have a problem with anybody anymore , or you don't even remember why you hated that . it like when I had a lot of stupid drama that is exactly how I felt and I just moved on and not looked back and forgot why I didn't like em or wanted too fight em it just mind over matter . try your best too never ever look back and be happy
What does the quote "You just hold you head high and keep your fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, dont let 'em get your goat. Try fighting with you head for a change. " a great quote from atticus finch. What do i think that this quote means? Well i think that it means try not to get in to a fist or any kind of physical fight and just use your mind to fight your battles. If you fight with you fists you bring up more problems. If you just use ur words or mind you will solve the problem and not add another problem to the mix. It also means not to let people get under your skin, and if they try then you just use your words to solve everything. How can i relate this to my life and what has happened to me in my past? This is like how i prefer to solve my problems. When i solve mine i try not to make it a physical problem. I use the word and 99% of the time it works. One time i jumped into the pool at my friends and got my friend splashed with water. She didnt want to get wet but my splash was to big and got her soaked. So i got out of the pool and we solved or problem using our words. We were fine and having fun again in a matter of about 10 minutes. It helps to talk your way out of problems instead of making thinks worse. That is how i can relate it to myself and my past experiences. "You just hold your head high and your fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, dont let 'em get your goat. Try fighting with you head for a change." A great quote by atticus finch From the movie and book to Kill a Mockingbird.
ReplyDeletePeople now a days talk with their fists instead of their head and thinking logically. They let everything get to them so their anger gets the best of them. "You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” – Atticus Finch. This means that you should say how you feel instead of fighting everyone that gets on your nerves. Actions speak louder than words to hold back your anger and express how you feel is better. To me personally this means that you should be careful with your actions. Fighting isn't the solution to everything, if anything its like adding fire to the flames. It makes everything before worse. You have to be the bigger person if they upset you. Even if they start talking about your family or your friends you have to turn the other way and just walk away from it. Show them that it doesn't bother you because they just want to get a rise out of you. Sometimes to win a fight is to fight back with words and not be so violent. Your not better just because you fought the person it just makes you look like you can't win without fighting.
ReplyDeleteThere were multiple times that I could have fought someone and got violent with them, but I decided not to. I remember there was this girl who was a crazy ex girlfriend and she got mad because her ex boyfriend flirted with me. She wanted to fight me and take it way further than it should have gone. All I thought was, "if I fight her I wont look cool and she wont look cool. What do I get out of this? Nothing except for the fact that I get to take my anger out on her, and then what? I'm left with the guilt of knowing they I fought her just because she was pissed off at me." So I just replied with simple answers knowing it wasn't worth fighting over, if she wanted him she could have him. The satisfaction I got out of not fighting was showing her that I can stand up without having to fight with my fists. I didn't let her get my "goat" I did the right thing without fighting and that's all that matters.

“You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” This quote was said by Atticus Finch from “To Kill a Mockingbird”. What I think about this quote is violence is not the answer. When you keep your head high you are being positive, when you keep your fist down it means that you will not hurt the people making fun of you, or solve your problems with violence. For example in “To kill a Mockingbird” Scout starts fight when she is embarrassed or someone talks bad about Atticus. Atticus told her this quote because he doest want Scout fighting because of people saying bad things about him. Scout one time started beating up a boy from school because he called Atticus a “Nigger Lover”. Also she beat up her cousin for calling Atticus a “Nigger Lover” and other things about Atticus. Scout also started beating up the little Cunningham boy for embarassing her in class for the first day of school. Scout beating people up was wrong because you can t solve your problems with violence. How you should solve it is by hanging your head up high and let the people talk, ignore them. Violence is never the answer because violence can also cause problems for yourself. Another example for this quote is high school. People get made fun of all the time and sometime there will be fight because of this. Some people get made fun of and dont start fights because they hold there head up high and ignore the haters. I get made fun of sometimes and I just keep my head high because violence isnt the answer. Sometimes you can get so mad because of being made fun of you just want to hurt the person. Instead you need to have good morals and walk away without conflict. Some people get made fun of because the people that are making fun are insecure and jealous of you. Violence is never the answer no matter the circumstance.
ReplyDeleteAtticus from “To kill a Mockingbird”once said “ You just hold your head high and those fist down. No matter what anybody says to you, dont let'em you get your goat. Try fighting with your head to make a change”. This is what I think this quote means.
A wise man named Atticus Finch, from the fantastic book To Kill a Mockingbird, once said, “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” This could mean many different things to many different people. What I think it means is ignore all of the negative people and look farther into the future. There is bound to be something bigger and brighter there that you are trying to reach to. Don’t let those Debbie Downers get to you. Keep on thinking what you want to think. And don’t knock them out. Instead, use your head and your words to fight back. These are the kind of people who think they are all that. They think that they can get somewhere in the future by telling other people they can’t get somewhere. These people are called bullies. They do whatever it takes to make others feel bad, such as saying things about you or your family. They only do it to get attention or make others feel as bad as they did when they originally got bullied. The people who got bullied first and then started to do it to others are the ones who do not how to handle a bully. They think that taking it out on someone else is going to solve the problem. They are wrong. They need to find others ways of solving the problem and not make others feel bad. For example, they should try taking the whole thing as a joke. That is usually what I do to ignore the bullies. What I also do is just politely ask them to stop. If that doesn’t work, then I just tell someone about it. These are some things to get people to stop bullying you. This is what I think Atticus Finch is trying to tell us.
ReplyDeleteIf I could relate this to a personal event in my life, I would relate it to what happened last year on my bus. I was getting bullied and instead of using my head as a weapon I used my fists. I did not make the right choice back then and I now know that it was not the right one. I should of reasoned out with the person, but instead I punched the kid. It did not make me feel better about myself. Instead, it made me feel worse.
