“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent
injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” -Elie
Wiesel
*What do you think this quote means? What does it mean to
you personally?
*Give an example from your own life when you have seen
yourself or someone else experience this.
This quote can mean many things. "There be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice but there may never be a time we fail to pros test." This quote was stated by elie wiesel. I think that this quote means that you might know your not able to stop something but giving it a try or trying to stop it doesn't hurt because there is always a small possibility of it working. For example Atticus finch knew that him and Tom Robinson were not going to win the trial but he knew there was a small probability that they would. He knew that it wouldn't hurt to try and if he didn't try to or protest what bob ulle accused Tom Robinson of doing he would know he was doing the wrong thing. Personally to me, this quote means that no matter the circumstance and that probability of you being able to prevent something it does not hurt to try and if you do not try you are wrong and are just as bad as the person that is doing it because you are just letting it happen and it will keep continuing. If someone was being bullied by 10 people and you are the only one that stands up for them you know that the chances are that they are not going to stop but it doesn't hurt to try and if you just let it happen you are just as bad as them. Overall I think the quote can mean a lot of things it's just your own interpretation of the quote itself!
ReplyDeleteI really like the way you explained and you explained it very easily and i agree that this quote has interpretation of its own and this quote means different to everyone. Good job on your blog this week!!

DeleteColin, I think you did really well explaining this blog. I really liked how you used the example of Atticus and Tom. I really liked how you explained it. Great job this week and keep up the good work!

ReplyDeleteThis is story of girl that go to Haiti and even though she know that it's hard but she never give up.This month she hadbrought a huge number of visiting teams to the villa where we live, which has been both rewarding and challenging. It’s always interesting to meet new people and to hear about the great work they’re doing here, but it can also be exhausting to have a constant parade of strangers coming in and out and to keep having the same conversations over and over (and over) again. In general, though, it has been a good opportunity to reflect on the many things She’ve learned in Haiti and to refocus on my long-term goals for my time here.Having short-term visitors working in the hospital has been especially eye-opening. Some of the short-term visitors have displayed a dismaying lack of sensitivity—visiting nurses have come to our NICU to see the unit and to “help,” which is both well-meaning and completely inappropriate. No nurse would ever think of entering an ICU in the United States without prior authorization, much less expect to work with patients there. She have witnessed nurses walk onto our unit, ignore the staff (because they haven’t learned any Creole), and start touching our babies (without permission, without scrubbing, and without bothering to wash their hands between patients). While it’s true that Haiti is a poor country and many foreigners come here to volunteer and offer aid, this does not mean that standard rules of conduct are obsolete. Other visitors have made much more of an effort to engage with the staff and speak the language, which is a great start, but she still feel like there is a lack of understanding in their judgments of our NICU—these people have not taken (or had) the opportunity to begin to comprehend the culture and the life here. It’s easy for outsiders to come in and point out all of the problems on our unit, but the issues that she have seen—lack of resources, staff shortages, poor and uneducated parents—are endemic to Haiti, and not ones that can be effortlessly solved in two weeks or one month. Every time she hear the statement, “They just don’t care,” She cringe. While she is aware that there are many nursing practices here that could be improved, She have also worked shifts alongside the nurses here and can honestly say she have never worked harder in my life. No matter how much you care, it is physically impossible for one person to provide good nursing care to five or six critically ill babies all alone. However, She have also been grateful to have these visitors—it has made me realize how much she’ve learned about Haiti thus far, how many wonderful friends she've made here, and how much her Creole has improved in the past four months. In addition, having new people on the unit has forced me to think again about why she am here and how to keep making progress. I am looking forward to the rest of the year and to the many rewards and challenges yet to come. This quote has so many meaning to it that we can write a book about it!
“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest,” was said by Elie Wiesel. I think this quote means that we can’t stop everything but just because of that we don’t give up. Today there is a lot of stuff out there and people know it can’t be changed but they try anyway. This then trying to make a point it tells everything else there is something wrong and it will go to the thing that everyone is trying to stop. So now those people will see there are something others don’t like and they will either not care or change it to make then happy so people don’t turn against them. Many companies and other things don’t care that the people have to say. Those people do whatever they wanted to do. But like the world is today many people don’t give up and keep standing for what is right. That’s were Elie got the protect part. Once you try to protect something people look at you the different way. This quote is great especially for today’s world with the companies and governments. Things need to change and that’s why people keep showing what the right thing is and what will help everyone, not just a few people. This can led to a lot of different ways it just depends on who is really telling it. There’s no wrong to it is just who can tell it better. This gives a great example of a lot of things that happened that I saw or watched or read. But after reading this the thing that it made me think of was a book I just read. That book was To Kill a Mockingbird, it is a great example because it has it in there and many people didn’t like it. When it came to blacks and white it was wrong and many people didn’t like it. The blacks were set up to have mad to do things that really wasn’t done and for years people wanted it to change. Now not really speaking of the book but today after people didn’t give up now they are all equal. Maybe in some states people still don’t like it but now it is legal, That’s what people are talking about. It is good to do what the people want sometimes.
ReplyDeleteAlyssa, I think you did well on your blog this week. You explained what the quote means clearly and related it to todays world. I also liked how you related it to, To kill a mocking bird with tom robinson and the blacks. Anyway, good job with this weeks blog cant wait to read next weeks!
DeleteGood job Alyssa! I agree with that we can't stop some stuff but you can not just give up. You explained the quote really well and related it to to kill a mocking bird. Overall good job this week
DeleteI think that no matter what, no matter the circumstance or who you are, there is something you can always do if you want to change it. The quote “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest,” by Elie Wiesel is a pretty accurate quote for my belief. I feel like us people have control over few things unless we are high in power, or well known. But even as one person, there is always something we can do for anything, especially when it comes to injustice. Most of the time, us people are affected after the injustice happened. For example, the recent debate over the cops shooting black kids. It was a huge debate, everyone either sided with cops or the innocent citizens, and in every case the cop pleaded not guilty. The only thing we as normal people can really do is protest, and that can make a big difference as well. Protesting can impact a situation greatly, especially for it being the only thing we CAN do about situations we don’t have a say in. When I hear this quote, it sounds odd, but I think of that movie Juno. The girl gets pregnant and wants to abort it, but while entering the clinic the gets caught by a protester. The protester obviously was completely against abortion, but since abortion wasn’t illegal the best she could do was protest and inform people. This protester told Juno that fetuses after a certain amount of time have fingernails, and I’m almost positive that is what really changed Junos mind, making the protester successful. Also while writing this, I thought that even though the protester maybe changed the mind of 1 out 4 people who were entering, she never gave up on her beliefs and tried her best every time. I feel like that’s what it’s about, working for the things you want, I feel like protest is a way of saying “this is what I want, so I’m going to do what I can to get it.” I actually think protesting is the most peaceful way to deal with injustice situations that you don’t agree with, because let’s be honest, they’re going to listen to the people with signs and parades rather than the ones who burn down buildings or break things as “protest.”
ReplyDeleteSundown on April 15 began Holocaust Remembrance Day, making this quote an appropriate one to think about for this week The Jewish author, philosopher and humanist, Elie Wiesel has made it his life's work to give testimony to the genocide committed by the Nazis during World War II. After Hitler's forces had moved into Hungary in 1944, the Wiesel family was deported to the Auschwitz in Poland. Elie Wiesel's mother and younger sister perished in the gas chamber there. In 1945 Elie and his father were sent on to Buchenwald, another concentration camp, where his father died of starvation and dehydration. Seventeen-year-old Elie was still alive when American soldiers opened the camp. Today he is the world's leading spokesman on the Holocaust. At the time he was in the concentration camps, he may have felt powerless, watching his family and others die for no reason other than their faith and culture. This quote says to us that sometimes we cannot prevent injustice from occurring, as we are not always in the position where we are able to do something, but we must never lose hope. Sharing the horrors of the concentration camps has been his way to speak up and make sure society does not forget this injustice. Perhaps even prevent it.
ReplyDeleteI think that this quote means that the worst thing that can be done in society is to have indifference. We can be overwhelmed with all the injustices in our world, from wars, animal cruelty, discrimination and environmental issues. We might think, “What can I do? I’m only one person. Throughout History, especially in the 20th century many groups rose up to make changes, positive changes. Women’s rights, civil rights, animal rights activist and environmental groups all speak out to change the injustices in the world. Becoming aware and speaking up,to give the world hope.
In my life, I am learning to do simple things to make a difference from recycling to accepting differences in others. Speaking up to a bully and a kind word to a student who may be bullied, keeping the cafeteria clean, and picking up litter, or stopping someone who I see being cruel to an animal. These may seem like small injustices compared to the holocaust or racial discrimination however, these small differences can help to educate the next generation.
There is a story about a man picking up starfish that were washed up on the beach. There were hundreds of them. His companion said “You will never be able to save all those starfish.” The man picked up a starfish and threw it into the surf. “Well, I just saved that one.” We can all make a difference.
David,
DeleteI loved your blog! I really like how you explained your opinions and how you used things to relate to the qoute. I think your really smart! You did and extremely good job this week! Keep up the great work
“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” This quote by Elie Wiesel can mean many things. To me this means that you can’t give up when you want to give up. You won’t have power to prevent bad things from happening. But you can never fail to protest, and what I mean by that is for example, if you want something to change in school like the lunches and the lunch ladies down want to make new food. You can write a letter or email to the school board explaining why you don’t like the school lunches. You can get witnesses saying how the meat isn’t fully cooked or the food is just cold in general, like this quote says ,you can’t prevent the lunched but you cannot fail to protest against something you do not want. This quote relates to today’s world in many ways, racism is still a problem today, and people don’t give up on fighting for equal rights. They stand up, they don’t want any more people getting hurt or killed, and police officers still do it today. In the past month there have been 3 deaths of 3 young black men because of their color. Even in our town there could be cop that pulls over a young kid for some reason and the next minute the kid is dead. What I think Elie meant was when you protect or protest against someone or something people look at you in a different way. They might look at you as a better person than you were before. The book , To kill a mocking bird is a great example for this quote because Tom Robinson was being accused of raping a women just because of his color , when he really didn’t do anything wrong. Also, the Holocaust, Hitler, a horrible man taking Jews and putting them to work and then putting them in gas chambers killing them when they were so innocent. The holocaust lasted for a long time and these children didn’t get to live their lives, they thought they were going to take a shower and didn’t even know they were about to be gassed. Hitler was a terrible man , and if he were still here today so many things would need to be changed in this world.
ReplyDelete“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” This quote was said by Elie Wiesel. This quote can be interpreted in many ways, depending on the person. In my opinion, this quote means that you may believe you can not do something, but it does not mean that you should not try. If you try and try and try, you will eventually get better at what you do. The longer you do something, the better you are going to get at it as long as you are doing it correctly. As my family says, practice makes progress. I personally think this quote has a very powerful meaning. I do think that everyone should try something new every once in a while. If you do not, where will the experience be? You will be able to explore yourself a little more and be able to understand what you do not like and what you do. This quote relates to my personal life. I am a person who likes to try new things. i love to explore the world and discover what there is to do out there, as well as try new foods. I feel like if i do not, I will get bored. For example, a few years ago I believed i could not run a mile. I decided to give it a try. It was difficult at first, but I got the hang of it. The more i practiced, the better and easier it got. I also make sure to have my younger sister try new things as she grows up. I tell her that if she does not, then she will always be doing the same thing over and over again and will not have experiences that she may need for life. Overall, the quote “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” was once said by Elie Wiesel. This quote means that you may believe that you can not do something, but you never know. You should always try new things.
ReplyDelete“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” This quote was said by by a very wise man. That man goes by the name of Eliezer (Elie) Wiesel. This quote has many different definitions, which means that it has many different meanings to everyone around. To me, this quote means that sometimes we might not be able to change something, or bring justice to something. However, you should always try to fight, or protest, for a change or a stop to something. Personally, this quote means that even if you do not think that you can achieve at changing something, you should always try. You should try to make the better thing happen.
ReplyDeleteThis quote can relate to my life in many ways. For example, there was a kid in one of my classes a few year ago that was going through some really rough times. His family did not have a lot of money. Me and a few of my classmates decided to raise some money for him. My teacher thought was a really good idea, so we told the rest of our class about it and all together we raised over 500 dollars! We got our classmate a bunch of new clothes, and a bunch of other necessities that him, as well as his family would need. Such as, laundry detergent and fabric softener, some non perishable foods, deodorant, and shampoo and body wash. The classmate was very surprised and thankful for everything that we got for them. We might not have been able to solve all of his problems but we did not “fail” a what we had aimed to do.
Another example of this quote is pollution and recycling. I, as well as a few other people have gone to clean up the beaches of litter, and have tried to “protest” against people littering. Also, the township gives up our own recycling bin to try to help from people throwing recyclables in the garbage and risking the life of animals. We all fight for these things. we may fail now, but that does not mean we are going to to trying.
Last, I can relate this quote to the book To Kill A Mockingbird, when Atticus tries to fight for Tom Robinson in court. He knows that Tom is still going to be proven guilty because he is black, but he still tries because he knows that it is the right thing to do.
The quote, “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” was said by Elie Wiesel. In this quote he is suggesting that everything may not seem to be fair, or go the way you wanted it to go. Maybe, even to go the way you never thought it would. We do not have any control in making these things happen, therefore making us “powerless to prevent injustice”. Because of this, the circumstances seem to come off as unfair. Although, if you believe in something, whether you can make it happen yourself or you whether have no control in it at all, you should still stand up for your beliefs. Personally, I believe this quote is saying that you can not control everything that happens in your life. Sometimes things may seem to be fair and others may not. Despite the fact that you may not be able to control the outcome, you should always, no matter what, stick up for what your believe in. If you do not do this, and if you just give up, then it is all over. Instead of giving up, you should try to the best of your ability to make it happen. For instance, back in the day, when racism against blacks was a big problem, Martin Luther King Jr. thought that the blacks treatment was unfair. He thought that it not matter if you are black or white to use a bathroom, drink out of a water fountain, or sit to even just in the same classroom. He believed that everyone should be equal. For many years he fought and protested to convince and express his feelings towards others about racism. Even though, he knew when he was younger that he had a slim chance of making a change, he still fought for his beliefs. He fought and fought, and although he got shot and killed, he succeeded. If King ever gave up during this, our country would not be the same as it is today. Another good example in present day in the US is the right for gay marriage. Some people believe it should be allowed, others feel the complete opposite. Both sides have been trying to get their way. Now in some places, gay marriage is legal. The people that are for gay marriage, especially the gays themselves, are thrilled and are fighting more to get their right in marriage. The people that do not think this is okay are protesting against it by saying that it is against their religion and they will not serve to them. Both sides think that the other is unfair. Both sides are fighting for what they believe in. Thus saying, they are doing exactly what Elie Wiesel says to do in his quote.
ReplyDeleteGreat job on your blog,Rigo! I completely agree with what you're saying. I think you did a great job at explaining this quote. Beliefs are a very important thing is this world, you did a wonderful job explaining that. Great Job :)
Delete"There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest." Elie Wiesel once said. I think this quote means that even if you are positive you won't succeed and your goal is completely unreachable, you should always try and make it worth it, because trying never hurts. I believe this is a very true statement. For example, in plenty of books it explains that even with doubt, you should always try and gain confidence. We all began to learn this at a young age. In the book 'The little train that could' explains this concept in a simpler way. I believe that if you always try, it shows the effort you put into what you did and you will be rewarded sooner or later when you're hard work pays off. An example in my life where I can relate to this quote is when I was much smaller. I was always shy growing up and I strongly and thoroughly believed I would never be able to make friends or do anything involving social contact. Sooner or later I learned that you need to talk to people to get around and live life. It stared out with greetings and soon moved onto compliments and kind gestures. Some time after that I found myself talking and making friends with people I never thought I would. I continued trying and trying, and I knew that even if I didn't succeed I still tried and it was worth it. Thankfully I grew out of my shyness and became more outgoing and it caused me to make awesome friendships and meet people and enjoy the people around me. I learned to appreciate people and even if they seem very intimidating and loud, It's better to try to break out of my shell and become more open and welcoming to new friends. I hated being so shy and timid, and today I am glad i am the person i have become because of my trial and error session between myself and others without them even knowing. This quote explains that always try, no matter what the situation is. It's always better and it can always lead to a great outcome. Thankfully, I learned and I will use this quote often as I grow up. "There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest." Elie Wiesel once said.
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the blog this week Devyn! I love how you said that it never hurts to try and it definitely is a very true statement. You also did a great job explaining how you came out of your shyness and became a more outgoing person. Keep up the good work!
DeleteA wise professor and political activist named Elie Wiesel once said “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” I feel like this quote could mean many things and relate to many scenarios. I think that it means that even when we know we aren’t going to be able to change anything in something that we feel isn’t fair, we shouldn’t just sit around and watch it happen. We have to at least try. A lot of times in life, the rules of society around us may have a sense of power over us. Many people may judge you for even doing one simple thing wrong. There are still people in this world who are racist and might discriminate someone because of their skin color for something like a job opening. The quote "There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest" can relate to many situations in history. One point in history that this quote can relate to was when Rosa Parks stood up for herself on the bus. The driver told that she had to give up her seat for a white man, but she refused. She felt that what was going on was unfair and unjust so she protested it. She knew very well that the bus driver was going to call the cops on her and that she was probably going to get arrested but that didn’t stop her. That incredible act that she did helped the civil rights movement tremendously and now she is remembered for what she did. Another topic that the quote “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest” can relate to serious issue that has been facing us for a long time which is bullying. A lot of times when a person sees someone being bullied, they walk away so they don’t have to get involved. That is probably the reason why we still face this problem today. Everyday, many kids around the world will purposely miss school because they are afraid they are going to be made fun of, or shoved against a locker. Maybe if all the bystanders realized that what was happening was wrong, they would stand up against bullying. I hope that the quote from this week will help people realize that they have the power to stand up for what they believe in.
ReplyDelete“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” -Elie Wiesel
ReplyDeleteThis quote is extremely wise, very intelligent and motivational. Elie Wiesel, a holocaust survivor, said this magnificent quote. Isn't it crazy how some people have the littlest problems and give up on themselves, but Elie went through everything and so much more than we could ever imagine and he still had hope left? No matter how much hope was left, he still had some; that's something a lot of today's people would not have.
Anyway, to me this quote means that you may not always get your way, or be able to make things fair; but you will always be able to try. You may not be able to stop that kid from being bullied on the scene, but there's no reason you shouldn't tell the authorities and try to stop it from happening again. There's absolutely no reason that anybody should ever give up on fighting for what they know is right, what they want in life. If we stop fighting, nobody will fight for us. Eventually we are all on our own, and there's nobody to prevent that from happening because we are human, and that is natural. It may be hard and it may be terrible at times, but fighting for what you believe in is the best and the only way to survive. If you're hurting and you know how to stop it but you don't, you're not shooting or fighting for what you're want. It is important to know your worth in this world because if you don't, you'll never get what you deserve. Honestly, a lot of people nowadays don't know their worth. People say and do stupid things every single day because they have no idea who they are, or what they believe in. I think that plays a big part in how you get along in life and where you end up. Mostly because you have to believe in something to fight for it. Stand up for yourself and the people you love no matter what, but also choose the right people. Finding people who will fight for you right back might be challenging, but I think that at some point everybody finds their true friends. The people who may hurt you by being brutally honest might just be the ones to save your life. Always know your worth and the way to go, but also the way to fight for what you love and want. Life might not be so bad once everybody gets the hang of it.
“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” – Elie Wiesel.
ReplyDeleteI think this means that when we see something bad happen to someone or something we need to speak up and say something or the problem will get worse. Even if we say something and it’s still bad, it might be worse by denying anything is wrong or keeping silent out of fear. Elie Wiesel is well known for his writings about the Holocaust and his experiences in death camps. He knows first-hand what can happen when there are no voices that speak out against injustice. In thinking about this there are examples in school, life and literature that come to mind.
Bullying is an injustice that we all experience at one time or another. Although we have had many policies, presentations and guidelines, there are many who still stand by out of fear or entertainment. Speaking out or naming bullies can bring retaliation which is something few are willing to risk.
An example in literature is the character Atticus in “To Kill a Mockingbird”. He was determined to represent Tom Robinson even though he knew he would lose. It was important for him to stand up against racism in the town. In this way he was protesting the treatment of black people, and setting an example from his children and anyone willing to open their minds.
For months, our news has been filled with examples and protests against the profiling of black men by police departments. Men of color have been stopped, shot or killed due to mistrust and suspicion that is race related. This situation has existed for years, but has only recently come into focus because some people had the courage to speak out in protest.
In life there are going to be times when we will see injustices. Although we won’t be able to stop these events immediately, the act of protest is the start of bringing them to an end.
