“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent
injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” -Elie
Wiesel
*What do you think this quote means? What does it mean to
you personally?
*Give an example from your own life when you have seen
yourself or someone else experience this.
“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” -Elie Wiesel. This quote is very powerful and many people should be able to understand what this quote means. This quote means that you might not be able to stop violence and very terrible things but you can still show that you do not go with it and you go against it instead. There are many times when this happened in history. One of the things that happened with this was the Holocaust. People could have told the government they were not going with what Had happened and were against the mistreatment of the jews. By the times that the witness doesn't stand up for the person is just as bad as the criminal. There was a time when a child I know was getting bullied because of the shirt we was wearing and kids were calling him names. So instead of just standing and watching I walked up to the kids and told them to leave him alone because he wasn't doing anything wrong
ReplyDeleteCarlos, I agree with your opinion on this quote. It is true that in some situations you might not be able to stop violence, but you can sure tell people you disagree with it. I also agree that most people can understand this quote and how important it is in our lives. I like your example about the Holocaust. It was very disappointing that the people of these towns did not speak out against government actions and policies. Many didn’t like what was happen to the Jews. They know that what happened was wrong but only a very few resisted. Could this tragedy have been avoided if enough people spoke up or acted against these actions? It seems that the silence of these citizens and lack of action was almost as bad as those of the Nazis. I also liked your example about standing up for your friend when the kids making fun of his shirt. You did the right thing. After all your friend was not hurting anyone. I really like this quote and hope that it inspires more of us to speak out against injustice.
DeleteOnce said by Elie Wiesel “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” Justice can be seen from a lot of different perspectives whether it is due to the upbringing of the person or due to their beliefs, however they are all guided by the morales of being fairly nice to one anothers. Sadly though, sometimes we may be powerless to prevent injustice from occurring, as we are not always in the position where we are able to do something. This however should not mean we lose all hope, there must never be a time when we fail to protest as justice is important. Without justice we would have no fairness, no equality, no honesty. Without justice nothing in the world would be the same as it is today. A great example that not only I understand and heard about, but what people around the world witnessed. Was when Martin Luther King Jr. and his great deal on a quest for black rights and equality! He was hoping, and dreaming of all rights for everyone to be fair and equal. He was not only standing up trying to make a change, he was helping the people that were powerless and couldn't stop what was happening in the world. Even though they were all mistreated, and got in greats deals of punishments for speaking aloud. Getting punished for saying things they believed in. Martin was not afraid to speak out and mouth his opinion. He made sure he let them know he was making a change trying to make a huge change in the world. He tried he did, and he succeed with having people protest be on his side for whats right. Not for what was wrong and for all the mistreated people it just was not right at all. Every step he took he sacrificed his life trying so hard to change the hate and disrespect that the white people gave to all African Americans. It was a struggle he got up and changed that he risked his life knowing what was right in the world! He made the greatest deal changing the world, changing what happens around you making a difference can help change the world. He changed the world for the best reasons ever. Everything he did, was with compassion and risk.
ReplyDeleteawesome job
Deletei agree with your responce, i do because we both talked about very similar things in our blog and we both mentioned martain luther king jr.
DeleteI think this means some times we cant stop stuff from happening because were not strong enough but that dosnt mean you dont tell people how you feal about it or try to stop it because trying and failing is better then never trying at all. when im put in situations were i dont agree with whats going on i try my best to stop it and it makes me feel good thinking at least i tryed because not trying would drive me insane and i would be wishing i did something and not nothing. See i like to put my opinion in the bowl so people can see my point of view and maybe see things through my eyes and understand why. I think god puts us through these tests to find our limits and to strengthin us. without these tests we would be so nieave and volnerable. and when i can help another person it makes me feel good and i like making others smile and that makes me smile and thats why i have alot of friends. my friends and family are everything to me and not trying to stop someone from hurting them would make me a monster and that would make me feel like a monster and i would run away and never come back if i didnt give protecting the ones i care about my all it would kill me and destroy who i am and who iam is everything that helps me make desitions. and some desitions can change who you are and what you believe.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Jacob. You should always say what you feel and try to stop bad stuff. I also agree that trying is better than failing.
DeleteI think the quote “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” by Elie Wiesel means that no matter whats going on around us either it be a new rule added to the school or government or something as bad as the holocaust if we do not stand up for what is happening around us in protest that law is going to take place and the holocaust is going to happen. If we do not protest things we do not like there inevitably going to happen. An example is the night of broken glass which happened in Germany and Austria during World War 2. The citizens of Germany and Austria did not protest it which gave the government kind of a okay to continue on what they were doing which then caused the holocaust. Another example of this is something recent. It's a lovely thing called Obama Care. Obama care is a horrible mandatory health care system that a lot of the United States Population does not appreciate. The only reason Obama care past was because the people did not protest it and now every has to pay the consequences because the people did not show enough protest. Thanks Obama! Another example this one of protest working is that the state of New Jersey was (and may still) pass a law to extremely add more time time to the average school day. The people protested and the law got put back and is most likely not going to pass. A finial example is this one also when protest worked was another recent event that happened in Hong Kong called the Umbrella revolution. The umbrella revolution happened because the people there were sick of how the Chinese government was treating them and millions of people sat in public areas as a act of protest. It was a big wake call to the Chinese government and they haven't bothered with the Hong Kong people since. I can relate this quote to my life because this year in biology class the teacher assigned a project that we had to right a letter to someone in the New Jersey Government to protect Diamond back terrapin turtles. We wrote to them to stop the hunting of these turtles. A few weeks later on my birthday (March 2nd) the teacher received a letter back stating that the turtles could no longer be hunted. Which means we made a difference by using a type of protest to get something done.
ReplyDeleteExcellent job Nick! I completely agree with everything you had to say, if us as citizens of the United States do not protest, our freedom will eventually be taken away on things we don't want to happen to us, like how you mentioned with Obama Care. I also like how you included where Mrs. Haines, (our science teacher) helped us protest together as a class to stop the allowing of hunting terrapin turtles to be put to a stop in southern states. Like I've said before, excellent job Nick. I really liked you're blog.
Delete“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” -Elie Wiesel. This quote goes with many stories we have read this year including Harrison Bergeron, To Kill a Mockingbird. When i first read the quote it reminded me of Martian Luther King Jr. He was basically powerless in the beginning of the civil rights movement but he kept protesting and look now, he is remembered in history. Years ago, african americans were purposely given terrible lawyers so they would lose and go to jail. if the lawyer tried and won the african american would still loose because the jury would disagree because they were all racist. Sadly that used to happen in society.
ReplyDeleteLike i said before this tied in with the story Harrison Bergeron. in that story Harrison protested and didnt like the fact that people had to be handicap because he is basiclly geneticlly enhanced and he wants people to show their talents and not everyone being equal. he does it in a violent way and he gets killed at the end but he wasnt afraid to protest (violent protesting never ends well).
On the other hand MLK Jr protested and got what his race deserved, equal treatment. he did it in a peaceful way and another person who did this was ghandi who was also a master at peaceful protesting. Sadly both great men who mastered the art of civil protesting were both assassinated.
“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” – Elie Wiesel.
ReplyDeleteI think this means that when we see something bad happen to someone or something we need to speak up and say something or the problem will get worse. Even if we say something and it’s still bad, it might be worse by denying anything is wrong or keeping silent out of fear. Elie Wiesel is well known for his writings about the Holocaust and his experiences in death camps. He knows first-hand what can happen when there are no voices that speak out against injustice. In thinking about this there are examples in school, life and literature that come to mind.
Bullying is an injustice that we all experience at one time or another. Although we have had many policies, presentations and guidelines, there are many who still stand by out of fear or entertainment. Speaking out or naming bullies can bring retaliation which is something few are willing to risk.
An example in literature is the character Atticus in “To Kill a Mockingbird”. He was determined to represent Tom Robinson even though he knew he would lose. It was important for him to stand up against racism in the town. In this way he was protesting the treatment of black people, and setting an example from his children and anyone willing to open their minds.
For months, our news has been filled with examples and protests against the profiling of black men by police departments. Men of color have been stopped, shot or killed due to mistrust and suspicion that is race related. This situation has existed for years, but has only recently come into focus because some people had the courage to speak out in protest.
In life there are going to be times when we will see injustices. Although we won’t be able to stop these events immediately, the act of protest is the start of bringing them to an end.
i completely agree with you. Bullying happens to everyone some piont in there life. Although no one should be picked on. It is wrong and everyone is equal to each other.
Deletei agree. almost everyone has gotten bullied before.
Delete“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” -Elie Wiesel. What i think is that if we see one person or group getting bullied if we all stick up to them as a whole we will be able to stop the bullying. But if we sit back and let it happen it will get worse as time goes by. Then finally when you try to stop it it is to late because the people who started it have a lot of people on there side and they wont care what 10 people say. But if you try to stop it early you can take on 5 people that are bullying someone but when they start to get more people to follow them it will be to late and a lot of horrible things will start to happen. One example in life is the holocaust. The holocaust happened when Hitler started started to bully the jewish people. IF someone would have stood up to him and told him to stop and tell him about how he would feel if he was in there shoes he would have stopped. But everyone sat back and watched him do this then he started to get more and more people on his side. Then he started to take it into to physical violence and would abuse them. Then he would start to take them away and put them in concentration camps. When they went to the concentration camps they would be killed in gas chambers. They would kill hundreds of them at a time. Then finally other countries were getting involved but hitler was so powerful it was hard to stop it. It took a lot of years to stop it and a lot of lives were lost. It was one of the worst time periods ever.

DeleteA wise professor and political activist named Elie Wiesel once said “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” I feel like this quote could mean many things and relate to many scenarios. I think that it means that even when we know we aren’t going to be able to change anything in something that we feel isn’t fair, we shouldn’t just sit around and watch it happen. We have to at least try. A lot of times in life, the rules of society around us may have a sense of power over us. Many people may judge you for even doing one simple thing wrong. There are still people in this world who are racist and might discriminate someone because of their skin color for something like a job opening. The quote "There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest" can relate to many situations in history. One point in history that this quote can relate to was when Rosa Parks stood up for herself on the bus. The driver told that she had to give up her seat for a white man, but she refused. She felt that what was going on was unfair and unjust so she protested it. She knew very well that the bus driver was going to call the cops on her and that she was probably going to get arrested but that didn’t stop her. That incredible act that she did helped the civil rights movement tremendously and now she is remembered for what she did. Another topic that the quote “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest” can relate to serious issue that has been facing us for a long time which is bullying. A lot of times when a person sees someone being bullied, they walk away so they don’t have to get involved. That is probably the reason why we still face this problem today. Everyday, many kids around the world will purposely miss school because they are afraid they are going to be made fun of, or shoved against a locker. Maybe if all the bystanders realized that what was happening was wrong, they would stand up against bullying. I hope that the quote from this week will help people realize that they have the power to stand up for what they believe in. Thank you for giving me this opportunity. God Bless

ReplyDelete“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” -Elie Wiesel. I think this means that when you are powerless and cant do anything about it that you just need to keep trying and to never give up. There are plenty of topics about this subject because it happens a lot each day all over the world. A big example I can name is the holocaust because at first the Jew's didn't know that would happen they it did and they became powerless because they were starved beaten poisoned killed and the only thing they could do about it was trying to survive and to try to stay alive without getting tortured. An example of movies I seen were 42 and Anne frank. 42 is example because Jackie Robinson couldn't do anything when he was being called racist jokes and racist words at him but he just had to ignore it. Anne Frank because her and her family had to survive and hide from the Nazi's and then were found and then they were forced to go to the concentration camps and then were tortured and then all of them died except the dad. This is what I think about the quote There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” -Elie Wiesel.
I agree that “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” -Elie Wiesel relates to the holocaust because they became powerless
Delete“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” -Elie Wiesel what this quote really means in my mind would be that when some things need to be done they are never finished or put in to action, but when something doesn’t not really matter as much or we care about internally we are selfish and act right away on it with the mindset to complete it. Also like a cop fighting crime, sometimes they don’t go after the real criminals, what they do is attack black guys for no reason. They act so much on the little things and forget what the big picture is. Another example would be a teacher or school, when they make rules some of them are irreverent and not needed like dress code. But they don’t act on some rules they should have like teachers aren’t allowed to keep you after the bell. “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” -Elie Wiesel’s quote mean something g g in ev ever y every sense and could be used for r many things. This quote can relate to me by the way I see things happen like this like cops acting on the wrong things and not focusing on what they need to be focusing on at the moment. Or what our country focuses on, more of marijuana then immigrants coming into our country taking jobs and space. That is what relates to me in this quote “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” -Elie Wiesel and this quote showed me there is a lot of situations like this and people need to focus on the main thing’s a in life and stop worrying about yourself and acting on something that doesn’t need to be adressed
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything you said in your blog. Our society has a whole focuses more on the small little details rather than the big picture.
DeleteElie Wiesel once said, "There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest." I think this quote means that there are many times that we are powerless against our higher-ups, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't try to do something about what we believe is wrong. In other words, if we think something is wrong, even if we're 99% that we won't succeed, then we should still try our hardest for that one percent. Because if we don't speak up about the things we think are wrong, we can't just expect someone else to speak up. If no body is doing something about a situation, then we should do something about it instead of thinking others will say something about it. As a society, I think something people should learn is that other people cannot read our minds. If we think something should be done about a situation, then we should not be a bystander. we should speak our minds because one day, it may be too late. One example of this is the Holocaust. I'm sure many people thought about speaking up but decided against it in fear they would be killed or sent to jail. But it may have only taken a few people to stand up for everyone else to realize that what was going on was brutal and horrific. But since nobody spoke up, the events still happened. No one can say for sure or not that if someone had spoken up that anything would have been done about it but in my eyes it would have been worth the try. So that is what I believe Elie Wiesel was trying to say when he said this quote.
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful Evy , I related this quote to the same this also !
Delete“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” By Elie Wiesel I think this quote has a lot of meaning. To me it means we might not be able to stop something but that does not mean we can’t try. If we don’t try to stop something we will never know if we can. For example during the holocaust when people found out what was happening they did not try to help. They just said that is crazy it will never happen to me. Next it means never stop doing what you believe in. if you stop and do what others say you will never know if you could do it. For example when I played football it was my first year and I knew I was not good, but I did not give up people told me I would not be able to do it. I finished the season and I plan to play all through high school. I cant wait to prove them wrong. This has a lot of meaning to not giving up and I hope others notice this to.
ReplyDelete“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” by Elie Wiesel. People interpret quotes differently , because people have different morals. In my opinion this quote has very great meaning to everyone , but in this case especially to him. This quote's meaning is that yes , there are faults in this world & people do improper things , which he refers to as " injustice " , but though they're wrong to do it , there should never be a time we do not stand up for each other. There should never be a time that we should just let injustice past because we think we cant do anything. I believe it happens a lot. Now & back then.
ReplyDeleteElie Wiesel has lived through very gruesome & terrible things & this quote , i believe , makes the most sense cause he's not only a Holocaust survivor , but he also lived on to tell his amazing story through books. His struggle going through the holocaust makes very much sense because this is " injustice ". No one stood up , very obviously , because if even one person did it could've stopped all of the struggle & sorrow people went through losing their families , friends & themselves , it wouldn't have happened. I believe he said this because he never wants anyone else to endure what he went through losing people , left & right. He wants to symbolize the fact that he is still there because someone told someone about these terrible , outrageous conditions. He is living , breathing proof that even if you think you can't do it , you can because you're stronger than you believe to be. So what he's saying is , even though ad things happen in the world that you think you can't endure or stop , you can. You're a stronger person then you thought you were. Elie is just saying to stand up for yourself , you should always do that.
What I think Elie Wiesel’s quote “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” means is that there comes a time when everyone is powerless, like when someone is wrongfully accused of a crime, when they didn’t do it, and are held powerless against society’s laws and rules. Also another example can be when Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of the bus during the civil rights movement. And because of this she was a big help to the civil rights movement. Or when Martin Luther King Jr. stood up for his rights against injustice for african americans. If people didn’t have the strength and the courage to fight for the scared or powerless, things would not be how they are today in modern day life. Another example could be when Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery all the way back in the early beginning of our country.
ReplyDeleteWhat this question means to me personally is that I think that its very wrong for slavery to have taken place in our past ages of this country because it could of hurt peoples self esteem and could of hurt them mentally along with being hurt physically abused because of the abuse and out lash of cops. It affected families, it affected people, it affected individuals, it affected lots of people in a negative outlook. Because they were treated badly and because they were also bullied and how they were also hard laborers the slaves were. They did all the hard work and were still abused and attacked based off of there race.
An example of my own life was when I met Ruby Bridges in elementary school at Bayville school in 2009. She taught me and most of my grade about the reality of what prejudice ness was like awhile back and how people of her race were treated. Meeting her showed me that racism and being prejudice is wrong and should of been stopped.
I hope this was relatable in some way and that you agree with me and what I have said, have a good day.
