“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent
injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” -Elie
Wiesel
*What do you think this quote means? What does it mean to
you personally?
*Give an example from your own life when you have seen
yourself or someone else experience this.
“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” This quote was by Elie Wiesel. What I think this quote means is that the will be times when you do not have the power to prevent bad things from happening, but there will never be a time when you fail to protest. Sometimes you can’t stop people from doing the wrong things. But you can never fail to protest. For example, as a student you don’t have much power to change things, but you can never fail at protesting. You can write a letter to the school board to explain you case and maybe you will make a change. If not then at least you gave it your best shot at protesting. Another example of this quote is the Holocaust. Hitler had the power to exterminate the Jews. No one had the power to say no to him and people wouldn’t protest because Hitler used propaganda, which convinced the people it was “O.K’ for this to go on. If anyone would have stood up and protested it would not have gotten as far as it did. “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest”. Another example of this quote is last year in the NBA playoffs. Last year, April 28 2014, The Los Angeles Clippers had a silent protest in the beginning of Game 4, Round 1, of the NBA playoffs. Their owner of the franchise, Donald Sterling, after an audio tape surfaced of him allegedly making racist remarks to his girlfriend V. Stiviano. He also made other racial remarks towards NBA Hall of Famer, Magic Johnson. What the Clippers players did was at the beginning of the game they went to the half court and took off the clippers warm ups and had their red shirts inside out that didn’t even have a clipper logo on it. During the game the players were wearing black wrist bands and black sox. They were taking a stand because they were unhappy with the owner. Their message came across because some others did the same to support those clipper players. After all of that Donald Sterling couldn’t own the team anymore. He was suspended from the NBA forever. The team later on in the off season was purchased by Steve Ballmer, executive chief of Microsoft. The Clipper players didn’t have the power to get rid of Donald Sterling for his actions, but they were able to protest and send a message that “ We don’t want to play for a racist”.
ReplyDelete“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” This quote was by Elie Wiesel. This is what I think of this quote, how it applies to the Holocaust, and how The Donald Sterling case applies to this quote.
I agree with Alvin. I agree with alvin because it is true that you cannot always stop bad people from doing bad things. also that bad things happen to good people. people are treated wrong for no reason and it is not fair.
Delete"There may be a time when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest." This quote was said by Elie Wiesel. What I think this quote means is that we as people try to make whats bad good, but it doesn't mean that it'll always work. But we never give up doing it. For example if there is a bully and you stand up for the person who is getting hurt it doesn't mean that the bully is going to stop bullying. Or It could be something else like if you told someone to stop smoking, you were powerless of to stop them from doing it but you weren't powerless of protesting. This quote means to me that no matter what, try to change something bad to good. It may not always work but it means that you never failed to protest against something you think is right. That's what it personally means to me. One time in my life I remember when we were playing man hunt they wanted to hide in the woods. I thought it was a really dumb idea, because one its late and second its dark out. No one will know if you got hurt. So I said no that is not smart. So I hid somewhere else and that person hid in the woods. It took forever for the person to come out so we all just stop playing.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ish, sometimes was as human beings can try to make the bad things better for everyone but it can not always be succesful. Even though we try we must always make sure we don't give up hope or faith in anything. There could be a bully that't bullying someone and you can help the guy that is being offeneded by the bully but that doesnt mean that the bully him self will stop bullying in general. Even if you know you won't make a huge difference you still try to and give it your all so you can say to yourself that i at least tried. Again it might not always work but you do know that it is the right thing to do.
DeleteWhat Elie Wiesel meant by, “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protect” was that we might not win but at least we can say we tried instead of not making any sort of effort. This quote reminds me of the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” because of the when the kids found out he was going to be a defendant for a colored man in a court case. So Tom Robinson aka the colored man was accused for being responsible for raping a white woman in her house. Atticus wanted to defend him because he felt that he would not win but he wanted to make an effort to try to help him win so he can keep his integrity. I personally think that it is good to try to make a different than end up having a guilty consciousness telling yourself that you could’ve done something but now you can’t. There is an example that I can use for this which is bullying awareness which is what started some of these genocides except they got worse and worse as time escalates. Put yourself in this scenario, you’re walking by yourself in the hallway and you heard a guy in a red shirt make fun of someone in a blue shirt saying that their shirt is crap and they look like crap because of it. What I would do is I would go over to the guy in the red shit and say for him to cut it out because that’s not the most appropriate thing to be calling someone and just watch what you say to someone next time. I can relate this quote to myself from during the 2rd marking period. My grades were okay but not at the best, one grade was a 73 and another one was an 81. I was very unconfident that my grades were going to be any better so there was one thing I did. I gave it my all to make sure my grades could be as decent as possible and I got mostly b’s and 1 c. This marking period I wasn’t as distracted since the last one I was much unfocused and did not pay attention as much as I did this marking period. I became more focused on achieving good grades in all my classes and now from trying to make an effort harder than before, now I am close to reaching high honor roll which has been a long life goal I have been trying to reach for a long time and I can finally achievements. Even though I did good this marking period it always can’t be that successful like the 2nd marking period I tried to do my best at the very end to fix the problem and I didn’t get amazing grades but at least I gave it a try.
ReplyDeleteKeon I agree with your statement 100%. The reason why I agree with your statement is because it was the best way to describe what Elie meant. I also like how you mentioned it was like TKAMB. Especially with the court scene and event he whole entire book. Even the book "The Help" this could relate to. Because in the end of those books they never changed anything. It is also could relate to bullying because you can be the by stander and try to stop it but nothing happens. So that is why I agree with you Keon.
DeleteI think you are complety right and couldn't agree more
DeleteEvery example you have established in this response i agree with full heatedly.
Delete“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” Is what Elie Wiesel once said. What they meant by that quote was that there will always be a point in life that it will be unfair because of the person’s race or because of some ones religion but that doesn’t mean that we should not just be a stand by and watch it and just accept it. I think this quote is very good for many reasons. The first reason is that it is a simple way to kind a say how WW2 happened. The holocaust was caused by Hitler who just almost took out an entire race of people in Europe because he made many very mean and cruel remarks and actions against them and no body even cared to stop his actions and went along with his actions. Another reason I like this quote is that it can relate to anyone who thinks they can’t change something even if they try and says you should never give and one day something will be change. A really good example of knowing you can’t change something but not to give up to make the PARCC test not a standardized test. But people still try to make it a non standardized test. And on the topic on standardized test I think our school system is corrupted with any kind of standardized test. The reason why think that is because is that we as students are not being “teach” in sense that we are not being taught things but is being teach on how we take the test. If I’m not mistaken some country in Europe or in very north America there schools has higher rankings then ours because they do not have a standardized AND there are no tracks. So from kids with basic skills to honors are all in the same class and are being taught the same thing but there are like 10 to 12 teachers in there teaching the students all at the same time. AND gym in that is a very big deal. And I’m not saying our teachers are awful but it is the government’s fault for even coming up with this stupid school system! I also read saying how Japanese are pretty stressful compared to schools in America but there is a lot more respect towards one another and to teachers. But I do need to say is that I’m grateful for being in this country and going to school in this country, even I don’t like this school system. So that’s what I think about the quote Elie said.
ReplyDelete"There may be a time when we are powerless to prevent injustice , but there must never a time when we fail to protest."Elie Wiesel . What I think this quote means is there will be a time when we are not strong enough to protect wrong doing but must stand up for a time of protest. To me personally I think we should stand up for anything even if our body are too weak to stand and protest what we need to protest. There may be a time when the world will come to an end but we have to stand up for what we believe in to make a point even to give our own life. For example Gandhi was a great example because he was ridiculed, beat, jail, and shunned but he still protest after all that time. They got there independent from the British he sacrificed so much time just to make a point. Even Martian Luther King Jr. was another great example because he got his protesting form Gandhi. The time when I protested is when I had an argument with my parents how I protested is just locking myself in my room and refusing to eat. Today there is rare amount of protest that are not shooting other people or blaming the cops. If we start acting more like Gandhi and Martian Luther King Jr. there may be a more peaceful protest in the world. In this world there is more hate than love in the world what happens to when people acted more civil and though about what their actions. The world has been corrupted by the power that we have with advance technology if there will be change in the world it should start with the people who live on it .
ReplyDeleteElie Wiesel once said a quote to “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” When he said this quote he means that through any problem you should never should let anything stop you from doing something. Its just like the quote don't stop believing in what you believe. You should believe in what you believe in and do anything to not fail or make what you believe in fail. Also that this quote means that anything that makes not as strong as you can be but maybe you shouldn't let that make you less strong. For example, if you ever feel powerless you should always remember that you should “protest” and get yourself to feel powerful again. An example of a time in my life i can use this quote is when in class and we are going over things. Alot of my teachers go over work on the board and do the problems in front of us and show us the steps. So one day in a class we were going over something and i got a different answer then the board said, but i was so confused. I asked her and a lot of people where getting annoyed because i kept asking and saying i didn't get it. But i kept asking and it turned out she did it wrong and i was right. Even this little time when i felt powerless fro getting the problem wrong i protested and did not fail. This quote can go to just little problems in the classroom or in this huge fight or something. Because either way there is never a time when we fail to protest. In conclusion the quote “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” was said Elie wiesel and was said to tell people that they should never feel powerless and if they do they should fix it.
ReplyDelete“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” -Elie Wiesel. To me this quote means that sometimes things that are unfair happen. If we do not have the power to stop the unfair things we can still protest and try to make people realize it is unfair. If there is a black man who is walking up to his house from the store. He is going to reach for his pocket to get his key. Before he unlocks the door the police shoot him and he is dead. That innocent man was only shot because he was black he had no power over that. Other people can protest against the cops and racist people. Then this will make them realize that they should stop assuming things and accusing people of things that did not happen yet and that were not ever going to happen. When people keep on protesting against racism and unfairness it might make people realize it is not right to be racist and unfair. We can never fail to protest because it is doing the right thing. If police did not take advantage of the power they had and if the unfair officers did their job right it would be way more civil and people would not feel like they are powerless. If at a certain time we do not have the power to stop injustice we still have the power to disagree. When we disagree we are allowed to say so and let people know our opinions and how we feel about the whole situation. People can stand up for their rights and not give up until a change is made. When people stand up for what they believe in and they want to really make a change a change will come. They will be so proud and want to make changes to all of the unjust things and maybe one day this world will be fair, not racist, and also not sexist. When people are determined to see a change and want to have a fair world they will make it like that. “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” -Elie Wiesel. This quote can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people.
ReplyDeleteIn mollys blog she gives good examples. She tells us what she thinks the quote means and then gives us examples to show us what it means in situations. Examples explain a lot in her blog. And that is why I agree with mollys blog.

ReplyDelete“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” -Elie Wiesel
too be honest this is hard too interpret . Kind of of rally confuses me but wheat I think they are saying from my point of view is that something's may be hard and we may fail but no matter what we should stand up for what we believe in . we should protest doesn't mean it has too be in violence or murder. it just need too mean something too people Too know how you feel , Like one time my friend Olivia shared a room with her sister but she wouldn't help liv clean her room and made it a mess . so liv took her bed and moved in too living room and didn't move back in her room for 5 months. isn't that one of the funniest things very . it was also the first time we hung out so I must like weird / strong people .
Elie Wiesel once said “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” My interpretation of this quote to me is , even if you try and fail to succeed doesn't mean don't try again. As much as you feel that your contributions aren't necessary. That doesn't mean oh I can't help them because i'm minuscule. Even the smallest contribution makes a great impact , you might not realize it but put yourself in there shoes and then you'll see. If you see someone in the hallway getting bullied because of their skin color , race , height , weight , sexual orientation or that there in band , chorus , or drama what would you do? Let me answer it for you , nothing you'll do nothing because it doesn't affect you. Now what if you were the kid that was pushed up against the locker , wouldn't you like someone to come to your rescue. How does this affect anyone around you because they're not the ones getting pummeled and or bullied. Now back to your shoes, Should you go help or should you just continue walking .Thats how the jews felt , As they ignored all the signs about the holocaust . They have been through so much and no one helped until almost the end of the holocaust. What if someone would of said stop and or stood out to help . The morale is always help no matter what. Because any contribution is a big impact.
ReplyDeleteYou know I used to get bulled and wished that the people who just stood and watched would have said something, but no one did. So i understand where your coming from and what you mean. Thats why i agree with you, people don't worry about it if its not them.
Delete“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” -Elie Wiesel. This quote is very powerful and many people should be able to understand what this quote means. This quote means that you might not be able to stop violence and very terrible things but you can still show that you do not go with it and you go against it instead. There are many times when this happened in history. One of the things that happened with this was the Holocaust. People could have told the government they were not going with what Had happened and were against the mistreatment of the jews. By the times that the witness doesn't stand up for the person is just as bad as the criminal. There was a time when a child I know was getting bullied because of the shirt he was wearing and kids were calling him names. So instead of just standing and watching I walked up to the kids and told them to leave him alone because he wasn't doing anything wrong.
ReplyDeleteThe quote “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest” by Elie Wiesel means that there may be times when we can do nothing to prevent a bad outcome, but we may never ever fail to try or speak up. Just because you may not be able to prevent something bad happening, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t at least speak up or try to stop it. During the Holocaust, millions of Jews were murdered. It was a complicated plan made by Adolph Hitler. There was no stopping it. But just because you couldn’t stop the extermination of millions of people, doesn’t mean people should have sat back and pretended that they didn’t even know it was going on. For example, during the book “Night” when Elie and his father were talking to the prisoner, he was getting frustrated at them because they had no idea that concentration camps existed. They just thought that a war was going on. They had no clue about the gas chambers or of any concentration camp. Since they didn’t know that would have to mean that people all over either acted like they didn’t know what was happening, or they didn’t want to believe it was happening to them so they didn’t speak up. An other example could be the Rwandan Genocide. Everybody in Africa knew that the 2 Tribes were feuding. The Hutu and the Tutsi were beefing for weeks and months on end. My example of somebody speaking up is the Boycott in Montgomery, Alabama. Around that time, segregation has been going on for years on end without signs of slowing down. White people and black people were segregated to the point where they wouldn’t even walk in the same buildings as each other. But even though it was pointless to try and stop the segregation. People like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X and others spoke out and eventually ended segregation. That is what this Elie Wiesel quote means to me.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything you said. Segregation is wrong. People need to speak up against these thing
DeleteElie Wiesel once said, “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” To me this means that there will be plenty of problems in life that aren't fair, and we can't do anything about it, but just because we can't do anything about it doesn't mean we should sit back and let it happen, we have to stand up for the greater good. To sit back and let injustice happen is exactly like us handing over all our power. There is a difference between being powerless and willingly hand over the power we have. It's like the Holocaust, Hitler made a lot of injustice acts and we were powerless to stop it, but we weren't powerless to protest and try to prevent it, and instead of us trying to prevent it we failed. We should never fail to protest, especially when it comes to something that serious.Personally to me this means throughout life i will come across problems i can not do anything to fix no matter how unjust they are, but I can not fail to protest and stand up against the wrong. There are many times in my life i have experienced unjust acts and people who do and don't protest. There was this kid in one of my classes who never did anything except for sit around, but still passes the class. This was unfair to all the other kids in my class who worked hard, but we failed to stand up and say something. We failed to protest against what was wrong and forget about what was right.
ReplyDeleteI think the quote “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” by Elie Wiesel means that no matter whats going on around us either it be a new rule added to the school or government or something as bad as the holocaust if we do not stand up for what is happening around us in protest that law is going to take place and the holocaust is going to happen. If we do not protest things we do not like there inevitably going to happen. An example is the night of broken glass which happened in Germany and Austria during World War 2. The citizens of Germany and Austria did not protest it which gave the government kind of a okay to continue on what they were doing which then caused the holocaust. Another example of this is something recent. It's a lovely thing called Obama Care. Obama care is a horrible mandatory health care system that a lot of the United States Population does not appreciate. The only reason Obama care past was because the people did not protest it and now every has to pay the consequences because the people did not show enough protest. Thanks Obama! Another example this one of protest working is that the state of New Jersey was (and may still) pass a law to extremely add more time time to the average school day. The people protested and the law got put back and is most likely not going to pass. A finial example is this one also when protest worked was another recent event that happened in Hong Kong called the Umbrella revolution. The umbrella revolution happened because the people there were sick of how the Chinese government was treating them and millions of people sat in public areas as a act of protest. It was a big wake call to the Chinese government and they haven't bothered with the Hong Kong people since. I can relate this quote to my life because this year in biology class the teacher assigned a project that we had to right a letter to someone in the New Jersey Government to protect Diamond back terrapin turtles. We wrote to them to stop the hunting of these turtles. A few weeks later on my birthday the teacher received a letter back stating that the turtles could no longer be hunted. Which means we made a difference by using a type of protest to get something done.
