  2. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." A quote said by the very inspirational Martin Luther King Jr. This quote can be used in several different occasions to block out hate, anger and ignorance. For example, in class we read "The Interlopers" Where two men were trying to settle an argument that has been going on in their families for centuries. One of them was going to kill the other and reign victorious of the kill. When the two men finally confronted each other , nature struck and toppled the men with a large oak tree. Counting down the minutes to their death the two men realized that they're hatred will bring nothing but sorrow and bloodshed so they agreed to a truce. At the end of the story, a pack of wolves were near the men and the story ends there. In real life, this quote can be put into play on several occasions. If two school goers were having an outing I'd hope that one of them would be the bigger man and resolve the issue in a civilized matter. That individual would realize that two wrongs don't make a right and violence is not the answer. To me, this is a quote that I like to live by and do my best not to stray off of it's beaten path. I believe that situations have two ways to be solved. They can either be solved the wrong way or the right way, preferably the right way. I have had my fair share of situations where I had to make peace between myself and another individual and only once have I had to physically defend myself. My father always told me to live by the warrior code, that code is to make as many friends as you can and not to get yourself engaged in an idiotic situation. Yes, they do say that action is indeed louder than words but in this case, all it takes for victory is a cool head, a pure spirit, a heart of gold and an open mind.

  3. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Once quoted by Martin Luther king Jr. This is a great quote! What it basically means is you cant fight fire with fire. You can't make a person stop hating you by hating them back only loving and be kind to the person can do that. This quote is very inspirational, this quote relates to things we talk about in class because it's black history month , we've been talking about how black people were hated and segregated and not equal. You can't hate and not expect hate back but you hating a person back is not doing anything. A person named Martin Luther king Jr. stuck up for equal rights and he changed life, now everyone's equal and yeah some people are racist but who cares their words don't matter. A movie I seen when I was younger related to this quote I don't remember the name but it was about rosa parks and she stuck up for equal rights and didn't get up when a white male told her too. This movie was about segregation and how terrible it was, well even though I don't remember the name I still understood it. That's what the quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Once said by Martin Luther king Jr. means..

  4. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” This quote means to me that love can only drive out hate. For example if u do something hateful it wouldn’t make sense to do something again with hatred to make up for it. Kind of like the saying “two wrongs don’t make a right.” I say this because like I said it wouldn’t make sense to do something on the same level of hatred. I also thing this quote means that we shouldn’t frown a pond something bad done to us but we should overcome it kind of like being a optimistic. This quote relates to situations or obstacles we have discussed in class. This is because many times during segregation people of different races were discriminated and had hateful obstacles to overcome set by hate full people and sometimes they revolt with a hateful action but most overcome these obstacles with a positive attitude and happy thought. When I say this I mean that actions speak louder than words. That is what I interpreted from Martin Luther King, Jr. qoute “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
There are many examples of this quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Created by Martin Luther King, Jr. in movies, books, poems and history. The most over being the segregation “era,” during the early 1900s. Another example is the recent move called “Unbroken” about the recently passed Louie Zamperini who overcame an extraordinary amount of obstacles and negativity were he had odds stacked above him and should have died more then a handful of times. This relates because he faced every obstacles and set back with a smile on his face and always had a positive attitude. That is just one example of how history, movies, books can relate to Martin Luther King, jr.’s quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

    1. I agree with you mike and I think that your explana was greatly executed. I believe what you said about the other quote relating is true because it does relate. The quote that was given to us also relates to many other quotes. I think that the quote you put in relates more with the quotes than any of the others. This comment is very relative to the quote at hand nicely done.

  5. The quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” By Martin Luther King, Jr. Has a special meaning. I think it means darkness can't make more darkness only light can bring accomplish. The other part means that hate cannot come out of your heart and go to others but only love can spread from heart to heart. If you're going to try to get rid of hate you need love from your heart or someone else's. It doesn't necessarily mean liking someone it could mean just love to make someone feel better. I think Romeo and Juliet goes with this quote because when everyone hated Romeo for killing him, Juliet still loved him and kept trying to get him back. She gave love towards the hate but sadly in the end they both died, but died loving each other and that's where i think the love part came from. I think it also means two wrongs can't make a right but with love.

  6. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.
What this quote means to me is that hatred is always the answer either living in darkness. If someone hates you for some reason don't always answer back with hate. If you show that you love someone and your forgive them, whats the reason for them to still hate you. You cant hate someone forever. That's why hatred isn't good. Darkness is something no one wants to experence or go through. Having a feeling that no one likes you or that you always mess up in something and cause something bad, is like living in darkness. No one ever wants to be in that situation, but you can always get out of it. Someone who can see pass your foughts and can be next you through the toughest time means that light guided you out of the darkness. Its the someone who knows what you been through and can help you get through it. No one should live in the dark. This situtaion happens to a lot of people in the world when someone gets bullied or they kept trying to do something and failed and feels like they wont be able to succeed at what they are doing. Then someone comes and helps you guides you the light and you see its worth trying. Another Situation is segregation. The blacks didn't have as many rights as the whites did. Using different bathrooms, water fountains, restaurants, and schools. The blacks felt like they were treated like dirt. Thats the kind of stituation that makes you feel like you are in the darkness.

  7. The quote, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." In my opinion I think this quote goes very personal and deep. This quote means a lot to me and many other people because it brings back times that happened in this past that are now resolved. This would be segragation it has been a big problem in the world until people started to step up. Martin luther stepped up and did what he had to. He made sure that there wasnt going to be anymore discrimination or segregation. This didnt mean everyone was going to listen to him but almost everyone did. We are almost a complete equal world. There are some people that dont care and just hate every race but that doesn't mean there is a lot like them. You dont have to love everyone you see. You also dont have to hate everyone just because someone said something bad about them. Love is strong and the only thing that can break it is hate. Hate overpowers everything. It takes down love and could ruin someones day. I think if you have to hate someone so bad that you cant associate with them then dont bother them. I would never be in someones face telling them that I hate them and so do a lot of other people I know. I find this wrong and hurtful for many reasons. This is one of the reasons why I liked what Martin Luther did. He helped our society in so many ways that he changed the world in by what he said. Therefore the quote,"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Is a very inspiring quote o me and many other people because it brings out so many feeling and memories of what it was back then and how much it has changed to now.

  9. The great martin Luther king, jr. once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” This quote means that you can’t fight fire with fire meaning that if you were to literally fight a fire with fire it would just cause a bigger fire. When you just really want to just put the fire out. When Mr. King said you can’t drive darkness out with darkness; only love can do that. I think he meant that just fighting whit the same point of view can not possible help the situation. That someone has to be the bigger person and realize that you need to change your out look on the situation or you are just going to have the same outcome every time, because you cant see the light of the other side and how to situation can be resolved by just a change of mind. Sometimes you have to take a step back from the problem and realize that maybe you have to sometimes let the problem go to be resolved. If you drive hate with hate you are just going to end up hating it more than you already do. Sometimes you have to be optimistic and change your feelings about something to get the best outcome you can get. I can relate this quote to many things in my life. One even that sticks out to me was when my sister and I got in to a fight. When we got into a fight we were yelling at each other to get the other one mad so they would hopefully stop fighting back, but because we just kept yelling mean things back and forth we were just getting madder at each other and just made the situation worse. Then we were told to stay away from each other and stay in our rooms. When it was time for dinner she was doing her project at the table. When I first saw her I just wanted to yell at her for getting me in trouble but that would have made it worse so instead I asked her if she needed help with it. Just by asking a simple question and being kind the whole situation turned around.

  10. The quote once said by Martin Luther King Jr. "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” This quote can mean quite a few different things. One of them such as how darkness cannot drive out darkness but only light can do that means that evil shouldn't be fought back with evil. It's not right for things such as murder to be avenged with more murder. That only angers more people and adds a flame to the whole mess of things. Doing the right thing about something will stop the issue that is being caused.
In the novel that we're currently reading in our class is about segregation and a black family and their life in the South. During the time they live in there are many racists which make it hard for them to live normally. People back then didn't think they were equal to them and segregated them from whites because they didn't believe in equality then. Such as how Atticus is defending Tom Robinson even though everyone thinks he's guilty without hearing out his side of the story.
This quote is very inspirational and can relate to past and current events that we're struggling with today. Darkness isn't defeated by adding even more darkness to the whole mess of things. Doing this doesn't make anyone in the right and doesn't solve the situation but just makes it even worse than how it began in the first place. Adding light to darkness will counter act each other and get rid of the issue because it makes it equal with light and dark instead of just a large quantity of darkness. With light and darkness together it'll make the issue stop and adding too much darkness ruin everything. Hate cannot be destroyed by even more hate but instead putting in kindness to lower the amount of hatred. Most people don't understand how this works and makes everything crumble which turns bad very quickly. To sum it all up, two wrongs don't make a right, so you need to add something right in there to balance it all out in the end.

  11. Martin Luther King Jr. once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. What I get out of this quote is that fighting fire with fire never works it just makes the fire bigger. Like when your girlfriend cheats on you so you cheat on her to get back but then she breaks up with you. Or when your brother is the banker in monopoly and you see him steal money so you steal some to make it fair. You never win with the girl you become single with monopoly you get kicked out and with the fire you just get more fire. What MLK is saying is when you fight back with the same thing you just get more of what you all ready have. This relates to what we have been talking about in class because in TKM Scout is terrified of Boo in the beginning and Boo is terrified of her but boo dose not let that stop him when at the end of the book he saves her by killing Bob Ewell. An example from history where this happens is the colonization of the Americas the natives were very opened to helping the settlers and even after the settlers took there land they helped them they fought the fire with water

  12. let me tell you about this quote that was said by an interesting man. the quote states that Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” this quote was said by martin Luther king jr. what martin Luther king means is that you cannot fight fire with fire. you would need water to put out the fire. that's just like what martin Luther king is saying with his quote. the darkness is the fire and darkness cant drive out darkness so he's technically saying you cant fight fire with fire. its also with the same thing as hate. hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that. he's stating that hate is the fire and love is the water. so the only way to put out the fire is by water not with another fire. this quote can relate to my life because I tried doing something similar. I tried fighting fire with fire. but this time it wasn't actually fire it was hate. there was this kid I had problems with I hated him and he hated me. so I was like if he wants to be that way then I will be that way back. then a week later I realized that if we keep hating each other nothing is going to change so I decided to step up and be mature and I decided to squash the bullshit that me and him had. then after awhile I hung out with him a couple of times and I guess he was kind chill. so after that we became friends all because of me deciding to squash the problems.
