“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.
*What does this quote mean to you? How does it relate to
situations or obstacles we have discussed in class?
* Give an example from a movie, book or history that could
relate to this quote and explain how it does.
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." This quote was said by the very famous man Martin Luther King Jr. To me I think this quote means that there will sometimes be negativity in your life, and your life will always be bad if you don't try to bring the positives into consideration. The second part" hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that" means that if you always envy people with their relationships or your constantly hating people or keeping grudges on people then more hate won't drive out for the other person you hate just because you started hating another person only love and friendliness can drive out the hate you have for people. This quote relates to what we were saying in class because we are talking about segregation and morality. Segregation was when the blacks and whites were separated from each other because white people thought black people weren't equal to them. Martin Luther Jr. helped the black people get the same equal rights as whites. Not all white people hated on the blacks. In "The Help" the book we read over the summer skeeter didn't hate the black peoples she liked them and wanted to help them. She found out that they were equal and that they were just unfortunate to have a different skin color. That situation relates to this quote because through the negative times in her life she found new maid friends and was very successful in her book she wrote with her friends. Some obstacles that we talked about in class that relate to this quote are that some v
ReplyDeleteBlack people made good things out of their situation like when the women were maids some actually tried hard and loved the family they were working for. Personally I like this quote by Martin. I think he was a very intelligent man
carlie good job this week you did good explaining. Every week you know what to do and write about. You are a great writer and I love reading your blogs every week. Great job understanding what the quote is saying and I cant wait to read next weeks
DeleteCarlie, you did an awesome job with the blog this week, I love the way you explain every detail and make it very clear to understand! Once again, great job!!
DeleteWow carlie I like the way you wrote this. You explained it well. You put thought into it. You normally do a goo job. Keep it up.
DeleteMartin Luther King Jr. used to say, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” This quote means that if you’re sad you can’t make someone else happy. Because when you’re happy you’re willing to do whatever that is good. So what I’m saying is that your mind isn’t set on making someone happy if you’re sad. So darkness can’t make someone’s darkness go away. When it says light is means happiness. The light can make everything better when one is sad. So when it calls about hate and love it’s referring to the same thing. So when two people hate each other you’ll never like each other because the feeling is mutual. Meaning them two will talk so they will like each other. But if someone’s hates someone and the other person hates them one is willing to make the conversation happen. With one making an effort the other one will see and try to make it better. One time in my life when this quote was reasonable was when we found out my aunt had something wrong with her and she had to go into the hospital. My brother and I were so sad nothing we said or did make us feel better. It was so sad to think that my aunt was about to die. Everyone there was so upset what was happening. But after the doctors came in and told us everything was okay she needed surgery we all relaxed a little. But that didn’t stop how we felt. After the surgery everything was okay so we all were happy. What I am trying to say is with everyone being sad it made us more sad but after the doctor came in and told us be changed our mood. With the doctor’s attitude and making sure everything was going to be okay it made us better. Today my aunt is fine but she can’t talk and barely walk but the fact that she is still with us today after everything that happened is still putting a smile on our faces
ReplyDeletegood job this week. I agree that With one making an effort the other one will see and try to make it better 1oo percent. your blog was great this week keep up the good work.
DeleteAlyssa,
DeleteI liked your blog! I think you explained really well. I also loved your perspective on what the qoute meant. I liked the ideas you formed too. Overall great job and keep up the good work
Good job this week alyssa. I think you explained this quote well. You also gave good examples. Also, the way you looked at the quote, and explained what it means. Anyway great blog
DeleteAlyssa, great job on this weeks blog. I agree with what you said that when one person makes an effort to talk to someone, the other person will try to make it better. I love the examples that you used. You explained it very well. Keep up the good work!
DeleteMr. martin Luther king jr. has once said when he was still present in todays world that “darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that . hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” In my opinion this quote can mean many many different things but I interpreted it as him saying that being mad is not going to make you happy, not being mad is what makes a person happy. Hating someone or something will not make anything better but loving and making the most out of it will make the situation a lot better than if you stay mad or sad about it and hold a grudge. This quote can relate to our class because we have been talking about segregation. The people were always sad that they couldn’t do or use the same stuff as white people. Well instead of being mad about it why not be happy about it. They wanted to use those things even know the white people where so mean, nasty and cruel to them. I think this relates to me because in baseball if I make a bad play or something along those lines and get mad it will keep happening like a domino effect. If I forget about that play and leave it in the past instead of being angry it will not happen again. This quote relates in my opinion to the ninth grade summer reading book, the help. All of the African Americans where always so mad they could not do what the white people where doing with out being killed or locked up. I think they should have been happy about not being able to go activities that the white people where doing because why would you want to surround yourself around people that treat you like you are nothing and are complete crap. In my opinion you should not want to. I think everyone should think about the positives that come out of things instead of focusing on the down sides. I also think everyone should make the most out of circumstances because being mad and holing grudges will not fix the problem.
ReplyDeleteColin, this weeks response was remarkable. I like how you related this to a sport, I never thought of it in that way. keep up relating your writings to unique things that people don't think of often (like sports), its a good method to writing well! good job!
DeleteThis quote reminds me of a more in-detail way to say the cliché “You can’t fight fire with fire” quote. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Is pretty much just three different ways to say you can put two negatives together and get a positive. They don’t cancel each other out or make things equal. You’re kind of just feeding the fire. The only way to fix a bad thing is to do a good thing, or to do the opposite of the problem. Like dark can only be fixed with light, hate can only be fixed with love, and fire can only be fixed with something to put it out. I can relate this to the things we talk about in class because back then, some people wanted things to happen but wouldn’t act upon it. Some white people wanted things to the change for the blacks, but because they were afraid of what other whites would think or say about each other so they went with it, or “fed the fire.” What Martin was saying was things can’t really be changed if you keep them the same. The whole situation with North Korea for example, were making all the wrong decisions by making movies offending them or fighting back, we should have handled it better and we should be trying our best to not piss them off the best we can. Things aren’t going to get better by fighting and making things worse, and the U.S is making dumb choices. This quote actually kind of reminds me of how batteries are set up, in order for a device with batteries to operate, they need to be in an opposite pattern, the positives and negatives have to be in a pattern to make it equal. People usually automatically jump the gun and just go with what everyone else is going with, whether they know if it’s wrong or if it’s right.

ReplyDeleteA wise man that goes by the name of Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Martin Luther King Jr. was a man that pushed for an end to segregation, which was the separation of white people and Native Americans. To me, this quote means that you can not stop something without bringing the opposite. For example, you can not stop negativity without positivity. Also, you can not stop darkness unless you have light. Last, the only way that you can stop hate, is by having love. If you have negativity in your life or if you are going through a bad time or a rough time, the only way that you can make it better is by finding a way to make it positive. What I think Martin Luther means when he says “darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that,” is that the way that you can get out of the darkness or get out of a dark situation is to find the light part in the situation. Then, when he says “hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that” I think that he means that the only way that you can get rid of hate is by bringing love.
This quote relates to situations or obstacles that we have talked about in class
because we are talking about segregation and being equal. Segregation is when white people thought that they were so much better than black people. They were treated very unequally. They could not use the same water fountains, be in the same school, or even shop at the same store as white people.
There is an example in the book/movie The Help that could relate to this quote. In The Help, there are people that are almost like nannies and they are called the help. During this time, there is no more slavery, but people are still not really equal. One of the nannies was writing a story about how they are treated and how they felt about their bosses. However, the nannies refused to talk in front of a white lady because they thought that she would tell their bosses and get them fired. Then, one of the nannies was able to convince the others that it would be okay and no one would get caught. At the end of the book, the story of the help got published and they all thankes the one nanny that started it and the one white lady that helped them.
Martin Luther made a big difference in this world with segregation and putting it to an end.
Emilee, good job on your blog! I agree 100% with what you are saying. I like how you said that you can't stop something without brining opposite. I enjoyed reading your blog!
Delete“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” To me this quote means many things. You will have negativity in your life, you have to try and make your life positive. For example, when you are happy you are willing to do positive things and when you are not you do negative things. Darkness cant make someone’s sadness goes away. They have to do it on their own. The second part of this quote I think it means, if you hate someone it doesn’t make your life better. If your life is full of love your life might full of “light” like the quote says. This means that the light is like the happiness in this quote and without happiness in your life there will be darkness. This quote relates to the discussion we had in class because we talked about segregation. Before today, blacks and whites were separated for different things. Such as, the bathrooms, water fountains, taking the bus, riding in the same car. All these things, blacks were not allowed to share with white people. Dr. Martin Luther king Jr once gave a speech that gave blacks equal rights in today’s world. Not all white people hated the blacks in, for example in the book/movie “The Help. “One nanny wasn’t afraid of the colored people, so she decided to write a book on the work they did for the whites and it kind of changed the way they lived. Skeeter the nanny didn’t want to pick sides like all of her friends were doing. She was being equal. I think that Martin Luther King Jr didn’t want to see any of his people suffer anymore and I’m glad that he stood up for his race. Yeah, his death was a tragedy because he was shot after giving an amazing speech that changed people’s lives. I think if it wasn’t for Dr Martin Luther King Jr we wouldn’t be where we are today. He is definitely an inspirational guy. This quote can relate to many people in many different ways.
ReplyDelete“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr. This quote can mean many different things, depending on who you are and how you interpret things. After I read this quote, the first thing that popped in my head was being civil. This is not always easy, especially when you are in a situation where you know you are right, and the other person refuses to agree. If you show someone that you are angry, it proves that they can get to you, which is their goal. And if you show that they got to you, then you tend to fight back and in a lot of cases, you say things that you don't mean to say. This can cause even more hate back and forth. On the other hand, if you show love and respect, that will show that you are more mature and can handle situations better. The other person may see that you are more mature and may like that, which means they probably will end up forgiving you. For example, say I am in a fight with one of my classmates. I chose to be rude and I said some messed up things that I didn't mean, which caused the situation to be even worse. If I decide to be mature and apologize for whatever I did, everything may clear up and we may end up being friends again. This shows that love drives out hate, as to how light drives out darkness. In the movie 8 Mile ( the eminem movie ), Eminem faces many hardships and fights. His weakness is that he tends to fight back a lot, which just end up making the whole situation worse than it needs to be. For example, no matter who it was, when someone went up to him and tried fighting him, eminem did it. He didn't back down, knowing that he would get beat up. This didn't make any situations any better, if anything this just made them worse. By the end of the movie, Eminem realizes that he can't show his hate, but he must show his love towards them to make the situation better. If you show your love, then you'll get love in return.
ReplyDeleteHey Summer, your blog this week is great! I love how you talked about the situations when you know you're right. Those really are hard times and I completely understand what you're saying. Hate makes hate much worse than it has to be. Great job on your blog this week!
Delete"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."- Martin Luther King, Jr. What this quote means to me is, you cannot make the hate in somebody's heart disappear by hating them with your own heart. Hate and darkness is only defeated and put down with love. Instead of hating somebody because they hate you, love them. Within this quote, he is basically saying to treat people how you want to be treated; in my opinion at least. It relates to many situations we have discussed in class, one being segregation. Martin Luther King, Jr. relates to segregation because, he is one of the first black males to have publicly addressed it. It stood up to people, he got people to have so much love in their hearts, rather than hatred. He believed that everybody had love in their hearts, but were made out to be cold hearted by the people they grew up around. This quote also very much so relates to some stories we've read! Romeo and Juliet being the main one, the Capulet's and the Montague's absolutely hated each other. Their hatred for each other caused much more pain for the both of them, than they; themselves had ever! In history, this quote relates to almost every civilization that has ever lived. Each and every one, unless they are still here today; had fallen from war. The empire clashes because everybody kept on fighting about absolute nonsense. This quote is telling us all to choose love, not war. You cannot kill hate with hate, you can't make darkness go away without a little light. This quote talks about the simple fact of the universe. Working together is the only way we will work. We may not have heard this quote a million times, but we have definitely known and heard many things that make it up. There's not a thing in this well thought out sentence that is not true. Hate will always bring war, and love will always bring you justice no matter how long it takes. Hating does not get anyone very far in life, it makes you weaker and weaker the more you go on doing it. The heart was made to love, and that's exactly what this quote means.
ReplyDelete"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” This quote was said by a very smart man which is Martin Luther King Jr. What I think this quote means is that bad things can't be taken out with other bad things. You need to find the good things to replace it with the bad things. It's like saying you like to smoke but you know you have to stop. Once you stop doing that, you start doing something else that is bad like doing marijuana. That doesn't make it any better. Instead you could start chewing gum so you can stop your addiction. The other part of the quote means that you can't hate something and keep find other ways to hate it. You can't hate something forever. You have to find a way to like it. It's like the saying" don't judge a book by it's cover." You'll always find a way to hate the thing until you try it. Then once you realize it, you end up liking it. I can relate this quote by back then white people did not like the black people. They felt like they were better then them. They were treated like animals. They always found ways to hate them. Then a time came when they realized that they are the same as them. Now everyone has equal rights and everyone is treated the same way. We have to find a way to make all the bad things go away and love everything. I can relate this to myself by at first I didn't like mayo on anything. I didn't like it anything. Well actually I never tried it at the time but I was just really stubborn. Finally when I got to eighth grade when I got a sub and I saw that my friend was putting mayo on his sub. I decided to put mayo on my sub and fell in love with it. Now I have to have mayo with my sub or I won't eat. You will always have to replace all the bad things with good things. You can never hate something forever. You'll find a way to like it. It may take a while but it will come to you. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” This is a very smart quote. In my opinion anyone can relate this quote to themselves.
ReplyDeleterigo this is truely amazing. i think that all of the things that you said were great and i think that i could relate to some of the things you said
Delete“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Said by the famous Martin Luther King, Jr. I think when he says this he means that revenge doesn't solve any issues, and sometimes the complete opposite of the problem solves it. For example, Hate cannot drive out hate, meaning when someone hates you, hating them will only make the issue worse. To relate this to today, in hockey one of the opposite players can bang into you and get a penalty, but if you do it back, you get the same penalty and maybe even annoy your team. This quote reminds me of another quote that my mother told me growing up. “If someone doesnt like you, dont dislike them back, just kill them wih kindness and eventually they’ll leave you alone.” This reminds me to King’s quote because he mentions that Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can. To relate this to a movie, In the movie Cyberbully, the main character gets bullied severely at school, and tries to go back at them, only leading to defeat. Plenty of people in the world should remember this quote when solving problems, retaliating never really helps. Making things better or being kind most of the time makes things dumb down or even go away. Fight fire with water and hate with love. Martin Luther King Jr. was a wise man who made a decision that changed the world we live in today. Another example I can relate to his quote is in the book To Kill A Mockingbird, Scout continues to retaliate with her teacher about reading and writing, and it's getting neither of them anywhere, therefore, darkness and darkness cannot make light, or in other words, fighting continuously will not solve the issue. Martin Luther King Jr was a genius man, his words of wisdoms slowly turned into actions to stop segregation in the south, and this quote explains the hate between the blacks and whites, the whites were wrong for hating them for no reason, and for years on end the blacks retaliated by hating back.
ReplyDeleteA wise man named Martin Luther King Jr once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” I think the first part of this quote, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that," means that when you are faced with a problem or a dark time in your life, you can't be negative about it because that will just make the problem worse. You have to make sure that you look on the positive side of things and know that everything will be alright in the end. All negativity is going to do is keep the problem intact. I think the second part of thos quote, "Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that," means that if you were enemies with someone and they had extreme hate for you, that doesn't mean you should hate them back. If you just be positive and not let it bother you, eventually it will go away.
ReplyDelete“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that,” can relate to some situations and obstacles we have discussed in class. One way it can relate is when we were reading Romeo and Juliet. In Romeo and Juliet, the Capulet and Montegue families were basically in a war full of darkness and hatred mixed with their long past. Even though Romeo and Juliet's families had nothing but negativity together, they decided to ignore the fighting and be together. They went for love instead of hate and light instead of darkness.
The quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that,” can also relate to the movie Annie. In the movie Annie is a foster child who lives with a bunch of other girls and the caregiver Miss Hannigan. The other girls look at being a foster kid in a negative way and always dwell on wanting to be adopted. Even with all the negative energy, Annie stayed positive. As you can see, the quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that,” can mean many things.
In my opinion the quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr means that you cannot fight fire with fire. You have to have the common sense to be smart and take a step back and look at the bigger picture. You have to look and see what the weakness is and use that against it. You cannot keep doing something that does not work. You will be there forever. So in term fight hate with love darkness with light and water with fire. Also this relates to when Romeo had wanted to marry Juliet. He used love to carry him through all of the people that hated him just for loving someone in a different family This relates to one big stand out in my book. When Atticus tries to get scout to go to school. At first he use the same techniques. But after a while he took a step back and showed her the bigger picture that made her realize why it was so important to go to school and do what she needed to do.in history there was a man that had a lot to do with this quote that actually took this into account. It was martin Luther King Jr. he was always finding ways around problems for example, he was a very non violet leader. He was marching and people would hate on him because he was black and he was trying to make a difference but he had just told them they were wrong and he just told them that he loved them and moved on because nothing mattered to him in that aspect. He loved people no matter who they were. If they were black white Chinese. It didn’t matter because he knew if you fight hate with hate it will never work you will get nowhere in what he was doing. You had to fight hate with love so that he could move on.
