  1. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Once said by Martin Luther King, Jr. I think that that Martin Luther King Jr. was trying to say being mad, sad, etc. cannot push out all the sadness. Only happy attitudes can do that, and positive things can do that. Hate can’t drive out hate; only love can do that because love is like being star struck and not wanting anything to be sad, or mad, or nothing that isn’t positive. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.” For an example of these chosen words, if you are all sad and people are trying to cheer you up but you just keep getting yourself down. You are driving in darkness and that person is trying to drive out that darkness with light (a positive attitude, etc.). So its saying only a positive attitude can draw out all the hate, and sorrow. For, “Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” An example of this could be that when you hate someone so much you bottle up the hate for that person, you are just never going to not. Nothing more than hate is going to keep drawing more and more hate. But, only love can do that meaning when you hate someone, you soon realize that hating someone isn’t going to benefit you. You just don’t care anymore, so that hate gets draw out by the not caring anymore and the love that re-fills it. A way this can relate to the book “The Help” is that the help or main characters in the book realize that there life is the way it is and drawing more and more darkness in. Soon they just accept it and turn that darkness into light and draw out all the darkness about that thing is out. Again, hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. In a way they hate the people that made this a thing, made being Negro a crime. But it isn’t so they hate those people but realized its life and its what’s happening during that time in history. So, they just except it and draw the hate out with love, love of being around the people they love.

  2. Martin Luther King Jr. once said "Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that; hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that". I think this is a very inspirational quote because he used a metaphor. If you're in a dark room, you cannot make the darkness go away but adding for darkness. It simply wouldn't make sense. You would drive the darkness out by using light because light is obviously the only way to get rid of darkness. Hatred is very similar. If someone hates you, you cannot get rid of that hatred by hating them right back. To get rid of their hatred completely, you would have to learn to like or love that person because that is the only real way dispose of their hatred towards you. This could relate to some of the things we've discussed in class such as the play we recently finished reading, "Romeo and Juliet". In "Romeo and Juliet", there is a feud between two families, the Montegues and the Capultes. Both families have hated each other for almost as long as anyone can remember. In fact, the families hate one another so much that not even a death threat from the prince can stop their battling in the streets of Verona. But when two teenagers from each house fall madly in love with one another, they stop at nothing to keep them together, not even death. When the pair of star-crossed lovers eventually kill themselves so that they can be together, the prince punishes the two houses with letting all of them live with the fact that their silly feud caused the death of their two young family members. After reading this play, however, you can clearly see that if the two houses had just listened to the prince and had stopped fighting, then they would've still had Romeo and Juliet alive with them. But because they were too blinded by hatred to see the light that could be the end to their battle, they decided to keep fighting. If the families had just learned that the only way to end hatred is the learn to love the other person, they wouldn't have had to live with the fact that their fight was the thing that killed Romeo and Juliet.

  3. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” This is a quote by Martin Luther King Jr. I think this has a lot of meanings. One of them is if something bad is happing you can not just leave it off to the side in the dark. You have to shad light on it. You have to find something good in it. For example if you are doing bad in school you can’t just keep not doing the work. You have to think about how it will help you later in life. If you just dot so the work you will fail and not do the get anywhere in life you are stuck in the same spot you were before. Another example is when in the south there was still slave labor. This was very bad for the blacks. They had no education and they were scared. But they did not just sit in the dark and do nothing. They did what they needed to do because they new one day they would be free. Next Martin Luther king Jr. had many problems with segregation in the south. He could not use anything white people did everything was separate. All blacks in the south had this problem. But they did not stand down. They made speeches and boycotted different things. One thing they boycotted was the buses. Blacks rode the bus a lot so this brought the buses income way down. They did this because blacks could only sit in the back of the bus and if a white person came up to them and said move they had to. In till one day one lady named Rosa Parks said no. she was beat up and put in jail. One day a law was passed to stop segregation and in made a difference. Now a day everyone gets along. Yes there are some people out there who still think there should be segregation. So they quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” By Martin Luther King. I be leave this means you have to shed some light on something for it to go away. Also that if you hate someone it will bother you but if you think like you love them you will have no preambles at all with that thing or person.

    1. I agree with you Jason. You can't just push something bad off to the side you have to shed light on it or try to stop it. I also agree that if you just push off what you have to do in school you'll just get pushed back. I also agree with you that African Americans didn't just sit in the dark and do nothing they did clever things to "fight" back such as boycotting the buses.

  4. I think the quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” by Martin Luther King Jr. If something bad is happening you can't stop it with more bad things you can only stop it with more good things. Or in this case you can't stop darkness with darkness. Only light can stop that darkness from happening and you can't stop hatred with more hatred only goodness and love can do that. This quote can relate to what were learning in class because the book were reading is "How to Kill a Mockingbird" and that strongly based on segregation and how life was in the south during the 1930's. Which this quote is said only slightly later then when this quote happened in the 1960's. Even though this book came out in 1960 and was most likely written in the years of 1958 and 1959 this quote can still be used more then once to relate to this book. I can relate this quote to the civil rights movement in the 1960's and the civil war. This quote was actually said during the civil rights movement and was actually referring to the struggle the nation was having during this time. Especially in the South and all the riots that were happening. Basically the Southern United States was like Ferguson just everywhere and almost every day. It was Constant protests riots and fear. I also related this quote to the civil war because in my opinion it was describing the nation at that time. The nation was full of hate and anger for each side and it was very dark times. Every time a battle would happen it was Americans vs Americans every time we fought it was more deaths on both ends but each side we lost Americans.. It seemed like it was never going to end. Even now in the year 2015 there's still slight anger against the North and the South. Some Southerners still proudly wave the confederate flag on the flag poles instead of the American flag. Heck the state of Mississippi has a mini confederate flag in it's state flag. There's also bullying between the North and South. Some people in the North call the people in the south uncivilized and the South call people in the North "Yankees." So the quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that" can mean quite a few things.

    2. I agree Nick, and To Kill a Mockingbird is a great example. In the 1930’s there was very little “light” between the races. I also relate this quote to the Civil Rights movement and the way Dr. King encouraged non-violence to create change. You are right that the events in Ferguson, Missouri are an example of inflaming hate and even adding violence. I don’t think anything will resolve until the citizens and police begin to try and understand each other and what has created the fear and mistrust, it is interesting how you linked this quote to the Civil War and that misunderstanding between areas of our nation still exist today.

  5. I think that this quote means that doing two wrong things dosent make it ok. Like when your in elementery school just cause he hit you dosnt mean you can hit him. I think it means that you cant hate some one who hates you to get them to like you ,you have to try to like them and be nice to them so maybe they will be nice to you. This is like in the olden days when people were judged by race and not by personality. kind of like these days people are judged by the way they look and not by there personaliy. I think a person is a person no madder what color or were there from and what language they speak or what they wear just because a person is diffrent dosent mean they are a bad person you need to treat them with the same respect as everyone else. Like in the help when Minny's boss trys to be friends with her but they cant because they are both diffrent races and like Romeo and Juliet because they couldnt be together because of there names and not because of there personalitys.

  6. "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that"by Martin Luther King Jr means many things. This quote means that if its dark you can't make it light out with dark stuff. You have to take light and make the darkness go away, without light you are left i the dark.If you are getting hate from someone hating them is not going to make the hate go away infact it will just cause more hate and make the who whole situation worse. Your hate for them will make everything worse. You cant hate a hater that makes you a hater. So you have to love in order to over come the hate. The more you love the weaker you hater gets and love will over power the hate you are getting.Love and light defeat all the bad worry about that and you will not go over to the darkside with the haters. Just remember to love life and not worry about about the darkness and all will be right in the world. this is what i think this quote means.
This relates to history in many ways. one way was when segregation was happening, all the blacks had to love being themselves in order to defeat the haters mistreating them. Black people had to deal with hate everywhere they went they had to love who they were to be strong and not let it all get to them and eventually they were not segregated any more.Another time I could think of is in the music industry. not everyone is going to like your music but you have to not care about haters and just do what makes you happy. With music you must be true who you are deal with the fact that we all have different tastes in music and you can not worry about every person. 7 billion people in the world chances are that someone's not going to like your music but you have to ignore that and do what feels right to you.

  7. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr. What i think this quote means is that when something bad is happening you can make it go away with something good. The good makes the bad things go away and then you will forget about them. Then you will be okay and wont be upset or disappionted with anything. Just like with hate you need love to make it go away. If you hate anything you need something you love to make you forget that you hate it . This relates to what we have been talking about in class because we have been talking about how there was segragation in the south. They treated everyone different. The blacks and the whites couldnt use the same things. They got different educations had different water fountains, bathrooms. They had everything different. This quote can relate the the book the Help. The whites treat the blackes as slaves. They arent allowed to use the bathrooms. They cant eat together. Everything has to be different. It is unfair how they treat them. Everyone should be treated the same.

  8. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is quoted as saying “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” One obvious cliché that comes to mind when I read this quote is “two wrongs don’t make right.” Revenge or matching violence with violence accomplishes nothing except to continue in a dangerous and down ward spiral. When I think of light in this quote I think of friendship and forgiveness. Friends can turn on a light and make things better when you are in a dark place. The light can also come from forgiving others or yourself. Continuing to be in a dark place will only hold you still or worse- bring you down. Much of the Civil Rights Movement or any successful movement in history was born of nonviolence. Rosa parks did not shoot anyone. She simply refused to sit in the back of the bus. And when this act was not enough, African Americans asked Montgomery officials to see the light by not supporting the bus system. In the fictional story “ The Help”, it was the book itself and the stories of these maids that shined the light of truth on the good and bad of southern families regarding the treatment of African Americans. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, we saw two young lovers die as a result of hatred between two families. Despite their feelings for each other and the best intentions of the Friar, the years of hatred and violence between the families doomed their beloved children. At the play’s end the families realized how light and love might have averted this tragedy. Finally, there is an old movie called War Games where a young teen hacks into the government’s nuclear warhead computer system. In the final scene nuclear war is about to erupt across the world where there is strike after strike destroying the planet. With a reminder from the teen, the computer stop the launch and declares that with this type of war—no one is able to win

  9. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr. To me this quote means that violence and arguing and drama is never the answer. I think what he means in this very smart quote is that violence and fighting is never the solution. Its called drama. Drama is stupid and unessacary. People cause it cause they have nothing better to do. What those people don't see is that there is a thing called forgiveness. Forgiveness and where you are in a fight with someone but you talk it out and don't act childish about it. theres a difference between a fight that gets solved with talking and then a fight that gets dragged on and lies are being told to other people. Lies that spread around about you is called rumors. That's what we have been talking abiut in class. Rumors are a bad thing that does not want to be done to you. Like I said people only spread rumors cause that hide from the light. A movie ice seen that has this is mean girls. mean girls ia a movie where these 3 popular girls meet a girl from Africa. This girl from africa is realy pretty so they start to be friend sbut drama kept occurring. and twords the end of the movie they finally grew up and talked about the problems

  10. The quote by Dr. martin luther king jr. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” is one of many quotes by the very inspirational man MLK. this quote means if you hate someone or somthing back it wont make solutions it will only continue hate. an exapmle of this in real life is our relationship with north korea. i know this is a bigger picture but we dont try to make peace, be friendly or help them get to a better state. i know they "threatened" to bomb us and all but we can one day come to conclusions with them and just make the world a better place and take down terriorism with the help of them. i know that isnt the best example out there but we arent really good friends with north korea and i thought it would really go good with MLk's quote.
another meaning of this quote is fighting is never the answer. i think that because if you keep fighting, no one is ever going to benefit from anything, but they will get punished with a waste of time, energy or in some cases money.

  11. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” What I infer from from this quote is that he is saying two wrongs don't make a right. The only way to fix something is by the truth or apologizing. Love can drive out hate but hate cannot drive out hate its a dark force ; its almost like saying ohy i hate you but i hate this person I no longer hate you.
My mother once told me that there is never a reason to hate someone the only thing you can do apologize and try to fix and if they still want to be sticks in the mud then screw them they didn't deserve an apology and just let it roll off your shoulder. Basically saying no one is worth huffing and puffing of your shoulder. If the person really liked to be a mad person then screw them like honestly just don't waste your breath.
This is an forestance you date a girl for a year and you really like her almost love and you guys trade some pics and them BOOM! yall break up and you have the photos what do you do , do you send them to all your bros and or brother or post them on twitter and instagram and facebook and tag her; or do you delete them and ask her to delete them and never talk about them again. The mature thing to do in this situation would be to delete them and let go and move because then you're filling your heart with love not hate . The more you fill it with hate the worse you are going to see what it caused to them. I believe everyone should delete them. Thanks evryone for the support it is highly appretiated.

  12. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” I believe what Martin Luther King meant is that two wrongs don't make a right , i don't believe they ever do either. This famous cliche comes to mind because of the fact that i believe its true also. I would never say that fighting and arguing about something with your spouse , girlfriend , boyfriend , friends or basically anyone is better than just simply sitting down & talking about it. A very large amount of the instances at hand , their will be an argument you can solve or just easily stop but just being happy , staying calm , & just truly trying to work it out. I try as hard as i can to never fight with anyone , of course , it does happen , i cant change reality though. Many times you will be faced with an argument or anything that you can easily bring up a fight and argue about it. What you have to try to do to go against this topic is either stop talking about it or simply putting.
A good example of Martin Luther's quote is in Romeo & Juliet. This is the tale of two star cross lovers with feuding families stopping them from getting married & falling further & deeper into love with each other. Their family feud is hurting their relationship , this is a good example because if their families didn't fight they wouldn't have both committed suicide. They would've been alive & well , but because of it MANY people had died. It just goes to show that when you're fighting with someone whether it be yourself , you family , your friends , or anyone on this earth you always have to do what YOU think is right. Never follow someone who's doing the bad thing because most of the time something bad will never cancel out something else bad. Martin Luther King is a very smart intelligent mind , & because of him we have this beautiful quote about being right to cancel out something that is not.

  13. What I feel the meaning of Martin Luther King, Juniors quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” means to me is that these words are metaphors for diffrent meanings, for example; darkness could mean hate or evil so what this could mean is that hate or (evil) can not drive out more hate or more (evil) and that only light can do that, which could be a metaphor for hope and because only hope can drive out the evil and hate in life, what he might be saying is that only the hope is what is holding us together as a community, a family and only us as a species can break the hatred and evilness in our world that we live in.
So an example could be that if lets say there are a lot of crimes in a certain area, they can only be solved by the people coming together and realizing that what they are doing is wrong and needs to be stopped by becoming better people and stop the fighting.
Another example could be that when he says “Hate cannot drive out, only love can do that .” What he could also mean by this is that violence can’t solve crimes, love or dedication can. And that you need to be friendly at times to get what you need to get done.
Hopefully my response to this quote wasn’t to confusing and I hope that you have a good day!

  14. There is hate all around the world. Why?Becuase humans sometimes think they are only right, sometimes we do not show others compassion.Sometimes we are over unruned by our emotions whatever the case may be there is always hope and there always a light at the end of the tunnel and their is always a solution. When there is hate there is also love. Martin Luther King once said,"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that". I believe by this he means that hate can be driven out by just some love and that the dark can be driven out by light.Basically goig against those who think thaty fighting back is the answer. We all know that5 Martin Luther K9ing used his words to fight back he resisted any violent protest when the segregation and the discrimination was the base of our society.

  15. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” was said by dr martin luther king jr.. what I think he meant was that being mad or sad all the times is ot going to make your problems go away. and it goes to taking that anger out on stuff you shouldn't be doing. like smoking or drugs. people turn to that but when they do there killing themselves by every inhale of smoke they take or the amount of alcohol they drink. they might forget about it but then they still have the same problem. so sometimes we think of stuff to take our minds out of stuff but there still going to haunt you over and over again . darkness here means evil. and it says darkness cannot drive out darkness, so evil almost means mad. so being mad is going to make you feel mad all day but that's up to you unless you do something that makes you truly happy. and when you so you will slowly see that you aren't mad anymore. hate cant drive out hate only love can do that. yes that is right. but the light here to drive out the darkness is something or someone you love is going to take away that darkness. that light can be someone's friendship or even something that you love doing. This basically is like when the segregation in the south. whites had there own fountains school bathroom and so did the blacks. and basically every colored person was treated unfair, and that shouldn't be the case because everyone has to be treated fair. this can relate to the book the hell. because the blacks were treated as slaves. The whites had way more respect the blacks. but the blacks ignored that and then they didn't have segregation anymore. and that ignore of negligence and the lack of respect was the light to push the darkness away. And the hate is basically what dr martin Luther kind jr did. he wanted s to it stop he wanted every colored person to be treated to be equally respected no matter the color of skin. he got the job done but there is still racism around . not everyone respects everyone but that's them.

  16. I think the quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr. means don't fight fire with fire it will only make a bigger flame. Don't hate because someone hates you or vise versa, try not to hate try to talk out your differences. Hate causes problems you just don't want and try really hard to avoid. This quote is like hate... the opposite would be light so you need light to get rid of the darkness. The same goes for hate, maybe if you can be nice to this person they will change there prospective on you as a person. Its kinda like shower your enemy with kindness. It relates to topics we have talked about in class by when we all don't agree on something. We might argue back and forth but no one really knows the real answer to the question. So why argue about it?? There is no need to argue therefore there is no need for hate.
I think a good example of this would be from the movie 'This means War'. There are two undercover spy/assassins and they are partners. they both fall in love with one women and they both try to do anything to get her. They were the best of friends and now after the girl came in the picture they are now enemies. This feud stopped between them when the girl picked a guy. After that they both realized they should have never fought because they were still right there to protect each other and still best friends. There was no need for the hate and once they realized that everything was okay. Now only if we could use this as a good example i think we would all be better.

Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr. I think this quote means that when something bad is happening you can make it go away with something good. This quote can be used all the time in the world for example every day millions of people are fealing darkness which means they are sad or lonely but if you use light which means use your happiness or forgot about the darkness you have been feeling or usto feel. An example is some undrafted players from the nfl they are all down and sad since they weren't drafted and then some get picked for a team and then they are happy and forget about all the bad stuff and start out fresh just like a new start in there life. Another example was a in a movie I saw called 42 no one liked him and then he became a hall of famer. This is what I think about the quote, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.

  18. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr. what this quote really means is that fixing problems or fixing situations takes courage and you can not fix x x something b y just doing the same t hing t hat ruined or broke or made something worse. The way to fix it would be to change and do what is right then make ways to fix it and do what you think w ould be better for the situation. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Is a quote that means that means two wrongs do not make a right. Only changing and progressing and finding o ut what the problem is then achieving to make things right. Martin Luther King, Jr. is a man that has been through many many situations in which this quote can make a common impact. Like in the help this quote relates to the blacks and whites. This quote that martin Luther king jr said is an amazing quote because it also relates to me myself. This quote relates to me because in school I was failing and that meant I did not care. But if I continued not to care then I would have been doing worse but I figured out the problem and changed what was wrong then instead of not caring I knew that the only way to make things right was to be a bet ter student and care about my work and don’t continue to make wrong choices that would affect me and my future or what I would like to do in life. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr is a quote that makes a lot of sense to any body if you really think abo0ut it. That is what I think it means and how it relates to me and my life

  19. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King Jr. This quote was used to help racists understand that the only way people will ever be treated better is by acceptance and cooperation. I believe Dr. King's meaning is that we can only achieve great things by working together and helping one another. We must come together for the betterment of the nation. I think he is right the only way anything will get done is if we stop discrimination, even today there are still 13 states that "gay" marriage isn't completely legal. Some people to this day, won't accept African Americans as equals, theses people are living in our own neighborhoods. I believe we are raise to accept difference, and that we need to accept everyone as an equal. I believe that nothing good can be accomplished by darkness and hate, only light and love can help. This means a bad mind set won't help get you or your peers anywhere, but a good mind set can and will help you in your life.

This quote reminds me of the time I had to deal with my friends parents. I didn't know that my friends parents were racists until I was at a ball game with them. They started a big problem because two black kids were sitting in our seats. It would have been a big deal if they didn't move, but after they started yelling that these were our seats, they moved very politely, but then the father went to the manager and demanded new seats because they were dirty because a few African Americans sat in them. I was really embarrassed, but when I saw my friend getting really angry I ask if it was because of his parents and he nodded. In that moment I understood that he would never discriminate ever. I thought this was good, but I felt bad for him and the poor family that sat in those seats. I felt bad for them because they had to deal with my friends parents. To this day my friends parents are still racist and I feel that one day my friend explode with anger when another situation like that happens.
