  1. I think this quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr. means that It uses metaphor to say that love is the only thing that fights hate, and responding to hate and bigotry with more hate only perpetuates the cycle, it won't defeat the hateful people or make them change their minds. As a minister, King was probably inspired by the Christian "love your enemy" (at least I think that's in the Bible, I don't actually know so you might want to verify that). Even when he was attacked as a civil rights leader, King never responded with anger as some of the others in the movement did, and encouraged his followers to use peaceful non-violent disobedience rather than armed resistance to fight injustice. Or just like saying you cant fight fire with fire or ice with ice.
An example of a book would be Romeo and Juliet. Romeo was a Montague. His family has been in a rivalry with Juliet's family for a long time. After getting secretly married, Juliet's cousin Tybalt killed Romeo's best friend Mercutio. in a fit of rage, Romeo killed Tybalt and was sentenced to banishment for life by the Prince of Verona. Juliet was going to be forcefully married to the Prince's kinsman, Paris and she wanted to be out of it. Romeo's friend Friar Lawrence (or Laurence) had previously married them and wanted them to be happy so he devised a plan for Juliet to "die" but the plan wasn't delivered to Romeo and so he killed himself after he thought Juliet was dead and Juliet also killed herself when she woke up from her long sleep and found Romeo dead. Then Juliet killed herself, and when both family's found them they ended the feud. So as the story is They were both opposites and they knew not being friendly together would cause much harm to both their family's. So thats how i think Martin Luther King Jr's. quote is related to this story.

  2. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. - Martin Luther King, Jr. This quote to me means that in order to resolve a situation is to change and make a difference. In the quote trying to drive out darkness with darkness , means that trying to stop something negative with negativity just makes the problem worse and it doesn't bring it to a conclusion. Martin Luther king and many others during the civil rights movement wanted to have racial equality, but segregation and whites and blacks hating each made racial equality a very difficult goal to achieve. In Romeo and Juliet, the Capulets and the Montagues had a feud between them. This ultimately led to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet and others. If there families accepted each other Romeo and Juliet wouldn't have to keep there relationship a secret from there families. All, in all this quote means that in order to stop an issue you most find a reasonable way to stop it , because two wrongs don't make a right

    1. i also agree with your opinion, considering that i also wrote about ceasing the negativity that could make a problem worse. the deaths of Romeo and Juliet only goes to show that fighting fire with fire solves nothing but negativity. when you approach a situation with a positive attitude, i think that the outcome would be increasingly better than approaching with a negative attitude.

  3. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” said Martin Luther King, Jr. I think the quote means in my opinion that darkness can only be brought out by light. In other words when a situation is bad it can only be fixed by finding a solution not making the problem worse. These two phrases have a lot in common. They both deal with a bad situation that can be fixed with an opposite feeling. Always think and be positive never be negative or do negative stuff they just lead to very bad endings. in class we talked about rumors and other situations about making the problem worse when u just do positive things to make things a whole lot better. Let the light shine through as some people might say. It makes things a whole lot better.
In the movie hunger games Katness Everdeen had to make some real tough decisions and some times made the problem worse. But you cant blame her for living a messed up life. But as the movie went on she made better choices and the lookout came to be crystal. She took risks to get where she is now. When things got tough she never gave up and thought positive and did good things. This is what i think Martin Luther king Jr. meant when he said"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

  4. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” This quote could mean many different things to many different people. What I think it means is hatred cannot be resolved with more hatred. Only love can keep people from hating each other. This quote reminds me of the phrase “Fight fire with fire.” This quote has to do with what we talked about in class by its has to do with segregation. All the hatred from the whites against the blacks was not going to be resolved by hating back. The blacks had to try to reason things out in a kind way. Hatred would only make it worse. Just like in the cartoon “Sneetches,” the stars wanted to be independent while the plain bellies wanted to be equal. Without being kind, the plain bellies tried to become stars, but that only made things worse. Everyone ended up wasting their money and they could not be equal nor independent. That is what I think Martin Luther King Jr. is trying to explain to us.
If I could relate this to an event, I would relate it to the cartoon “Sneetches.” Just like in the last paragraph, the stars wanted to be independent while the plain bellies wanted to be equal. Then someone came to the place where they were and made them pay $5 for stars on their bellies. This made the star bellies upset and they wanted to be independent again. So the same man charged $10 for a plain belly. This made the old plain bellies upset and then the war started between independence and equality. The cartoon ended with people being neither independent nor equal. And everyone had to accept that. This ended the war between the Sneetches. Just like it ended the war against segregation.

    1. This response is a very strong response. It makes complete sense and I have the same view as you do. The example that you said works really well. Just like Romeo and Juliet. But otherwise great response.

  5. The quote, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that,” was said by Martin Luther King Jr., means to me that two wrongs do not make a right. I believe when people do wrong against a person, it is their fault, and it is not right to continue their wrongdoing with another one. For example, in Romeo and Juliet, the Capulets had a long term hatred for the Montagues. Since the Capulets made it known to them that they hated them, the Montagues decided to fight fire with fire. To solve this problem, either one of the families had to respect the other family. If they did this, their problems would be resolved and the ongoing feud they have been participating in would be over. If people are constantly arguing or fighting, the outcome would be dissatisfying, considering they hurt the people they were against. The feeling of fighting with someone could be exhilarating and thrilling, however this feeling only stays for a few moments. Fighting with someone could be saddening anyway, greatly affecting the way you perform in school, the relationships with family and friends, and the extra curricular activities that you may be participating in. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, Tom was against Jay Gatsby because he started to realize that his wife, Daisy, could have feelings for Jay. When he realized this was happening, he started to dislike Jay, and constantly target him with his past, and his well-being. He then ended up lying about Jay, saying that he hit a woman with his car, when it was Daisy all along. Tom did not know the entire story, and ended up lying to the woman’s husband. This later resulted in the death of Jay Gatsby because of Tom’s want for him to be taken out. Not only did a tragic death occur, but the carelessness of Tom and Daisy resulted in nothing, having no advantage for anyone. Tom and Daisy ended up fleeing the scene and leaving their home so get away from the mess he created. This goes to show that solving a problem with another conflict creates chaos and negativity of the people being involved.

  6. "Darkness cannot drive out darkness ; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; on love can do that," was quoted by Martin Luther King Jr. I believe from this quote the darkness represents hate and the light represents love. Only love can cure hate and only light can cure darkness like how a light bulb lights up a a dark room as how love lights up hate to become happiness. Love is something to fall back onto when hate is all around you and will be there to bring you out of a slump and make you happy. Hate will bring you down but will never crash you because love will always bounce you back. Like how i was once in a slump over me and my parents fighting and i had cassandra to be there to fall back onto and it just really helps because her helping me made get through all the hate that i was going on in my life and theres really no other help like it. Also it helps because i remember when i had been having some problems with some certain people and cassandra had been there to back me up and had reassured me and made me feel good. Now this is the representation of how light "cassandra" had brought me out of darkness "drama". This i believe is a great example "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that".

  7. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Once said by Martin Luther King Jr. This quote could have many different meanings. But to me it means that two wrongs don’t make a right. If you’re in a situation that is bad and filled with darkness if you keep a bad attitude then the situation will never get any better and you will never see the light in the situation. Because if you are being like everyone else nothing will change. If you hate someone and they hate you back and you guys keep fight and saying nasty stuff about someone you just make the situation worst. But if you don’t say anything and be neutral to the person the situation won’t matter. This is because you are showing no hate towards this person. Or like if you don’t agree with something that’s going on you can’t hate it cause you have to learn to respect other peoples view on things. For example Martin Luther King Jr. never wanted violence to get colored people the same rights cause he knew that getting on the whites level wouldn’t help the situation. So he fought with love not hate so he had a positive out look on how it would end. In the book The Help they fought hate with love. They didn’t get their message across by violence they did it through they wrote a book so everyone could see it and understand how bad it was. They wanted people to know what was going on but not in a bad way they fought it with love, not hate. They knew that fighting hate with hate wouldn’t make people understand it would be like fighting fire with fire. The news f violence and other hate full things would spread around like a fire would spread but they would get a negative respond from it and make the problem worst or have a bigger fire and you don’t want that. This is a great quote said by a great man.

  8. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." This quote was said by the notorious and one of the most famous African Americans, Martin Luther King, Jr. I think this quote means that two negatives are not going to make a change. It is going to be the opposite that is going to change what happens. So basically the only thing that could change hate is love. Same with darkness, light would change that. So as long as there is an opposite to the situation, it will change. That is what I think of the quote. This quote relates to the things that we are learning in class when we read stories. For example, in Romeo and Juliet, the Capulets had a family feud with the Montagues. The way the tried to solve the problem was with hatred. They would always fight and the next fight in public the prince would order them to be killed. So it slowed down for a while. This was until Romeo and Juliet found love at a party. This turned the plot around. The two loved each other very much so. After getting secretly married, Juliet's cousin Tybalt killed Romeo's best friend Mercutio. Romeo killed Tybalt after he saw the killing of his best friend. He then was sentenced to leave the city for life by the Prince. Juliet was going to be forcefully married to Paris and she wanted to be out of it. Romeo's friend Friar had previously married them and wanted them to be happy so he made a plan for Juliet to go to sleep for 40 hours and really supposed to be dead. The plan was supposed to be delivered to Romeo. That never got there and Romeo heard the news. There he went back to the city and killed himself next to Juliet's "sleeping" body. She wakes up and sees him there, kills herself. So in the end they both end up dying. But that hatred between the families was solved by love, and then death. With death came light upon the two families and resolved their problems.

  10. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” This quote means to me that love can only drive out hate. For example if u do something hateful it wouldn’t make sense to do something again with hatred to make up for it. Kind of like the saying “two wrongs don’t make a right.” I say this because like I said it wouldn’t make sense to do something on the same level of hatred. I also thing this quote means that we shouldn’t frown a pond something bad done to us but we should overcome it kind of like being a optimistic. This quote relates to situations or obstacles we have discussed in class. This is because many times during segregation people of different races were discriminated and had hateful obstacles to overcome set by hate full people and sometimes they revolt with a hateful action but most overcome these obstacles with a positive attitude and happy thought. When I say this I mean that actions speak louder than words. That is what I interpreted from Martin Luther King, Jr. qoute “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
There are many examples of this quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Created by Martin Luther King, Jr. in movies, books, poems and history. The most over being the segregation “era,” during the early 1900s. Another example is the recent move called “Unbroken” about the recently passed Louie Zamperini who overcame an extraordinary amount of obstacles and negativity were he had odds stacked above him and should have died more then a handful of times. This relates because he faced every obstacles and set back with a smile on his face and always had a positive attitude. That is just one example of how history, movies, books can relate to Martin Luther King, jr.’s quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

  11. I think the quote "“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” by Martin Luther King Jr. means that only by being nice to others you can get rid of the bad stuff in the world. It's kind of like "don't fight fire with fire". If someone's being mean to you, you shouldn't be mean to them also because it'll just make things worse. If people are being hateful you shouldn't be hateful back to them, because it doesn't make you the better person. This quote relates to the time period Martin Luther grew up in. People discriminated against different races on the daily and hate was a common thing shown towards them. Martin Luther had to deal with that kind of thing every day, but he wasn't hateful towards them because he knew that it wouldn't fix things. Instead he resorted to peaceful ways to change things. By not being hateful and encouraging others not to be hateful he used his "light" to drive out the "darkness" of racism. This relates to other situations, like when you're fighting with friends. If you guys keep fighting and being mean to each other then you're just going to end up hating each other more and not wanting to be friends again. If you stop hating the other and apologize though than you can stop fighting. I think this relates to the play Romeo and Juliet. In the play the Capulets and Montegues hated each other's family for no reason. They always fought and caused problems and the peopel from both sides of the families disliked each other without any reason to. This fighting led to the families not liking Romeo and Juliet being together because they were from different families. People from both sides fought over this problem, causing many people to die. Mercutio, Benvolio, and Romeo all fight Tybalt and Mercutio and Tybalt die because of it. Also when Romeo think Juliet is dead he kills himself, and when Juliet wakes up to find Romeo dead she kills herself also. This was all caused by the "hate" and "darkness" between the families.

  12. Martin Luther King Jr. once said "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." What I think this quote means to me is I think it means that if someone hates you then you can't hate them because then that will make things worse. Instead of hating someone that hates you, just ignore them so that they won't bother you. For example, in Romeo and Juliet, there was a feud between the Monteques and Capulets, there was hatred toward each other so that caused darkness between the families. This caused more problems as Romeo and Juliet wanted to be together but they couldn't. Pretty much they couldn't love each other without showing love because they never accepted liking one another. Another example is racism. There weren't equal rights for black and whites and they didn't like one another,so the hatred caused more of a situation but as years went by there is now equal rights. That is what I think the quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” means.

  13. Long ago a very intelligent man once stated, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” His name was Martin Luther King Jr. I think this quote means that there is always a positive side to each situation. All you have to do is look for it. If you can't find that positive situation you should provide it or create one. Sometimes it's hard to do that though. Situations and problems can be really tough and without that positive outlook or balance it could be a whole lot worse. People need to understand that the positive will always overrun the negative. It just might take a little longer.
This quote relates to me in many ways. One way it relates to me is when my parents were having money issues. We couldn't buy the many things we wanted and we were only allowed to focus on the things we needed. It was very upsetting seeing my parents sad and stressed out. There was nothing I could do about it. So I looked for the positive side of things. For example, I still have a roof over my head. I have food on my plate, and I have a family that loves me. That's all I really need. I don't need to go into the most expensive store and get a playstation 4 or a one-hundred dollar pair of shoes. I'm happy with what I have and I'm willing to live with it.

  14. The quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr means that you can not stop a act of hatred by doing another act of hatred. You can not fix a problem by trying to fix it with another problem. This quote means a lot to me. This relates to what we have discussed in class because slaves did not try to fight against there slave owners. They did not try to fight hatred with hatred. This relates to me because i wanted to get into a fight with someone but i thought about it and realized that i shouldnt fight because thats fighting hatred with hatred. Also this quote means that you should stay positive. You should never let anyone bring you down. And if they do you should never try to get back at them by doing a act of hatred.
