“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.
*What does this quote mean to you? How does it relate to
situations or obstacles we have discussed in class?
* Give an example from a movie, book or history that could
relate to this quote and explain how it does.
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This quote means to me is that if you do something wrong and do something wrong again doesn't make it right just like hate. For example if you hate someone or something if you pile on more hate your hatred will just grow even more. The movie I can think of is from "Big Hero Six" there was a fire and the brother professor was trapped inside so the kid's brother tried to save him but died but the professor was fine because of he had nanobots saved the professor. Later on the kid fines out that it was the professor and hatred clouds his mind. After he sees something that his brother left him. He becomes more thought full about the choice he makes. It is related to the situations that have ben discussed in the class because everybody has different opinions about what is right and wrong. An example of this would be world war 2 when Adolf Hitler was in command of Germany. When he was in charge in his mind the Jews were to blame. Also in early American we thought men were superior to women but now they have equal right. With this quote there are many opinion about it but the fact is still there "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." By Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Dan on his thought of the quote from Martin Luther King Jr. The movie that was mentioned "Big Hero Six" seems to match this quote quite well and it was a good choice to choose that movie to compare with the quote. I have seen the movie and have seen what happens during the movie and there is one event that happens to match the quote. In one scene during the movie, the Kid and his brother's friends found the man responsible for causing the death of his brother and causing destruction where ever he goes. After finding out who was behind it he went over to Bamax which was a robot that was made by his brother to be a health bot but had a fighting chip inside his system to be caring and fighting robot. The Kid was so mad at the man that he took the health chip out and wanted Bamax to kill him to avenge his brother that was killed by him. The movie was a good choice for this blog and I agree with when Hitler was in command of Germany too.
DeleteI fully agree with you Daniel. Also great example too! I loved Big Hero Six. When Hiro and his friends found out who caused Tadashi's death, Hiro was so mad that he tried to kill the man in revenge and to avenge him. I think that that was a really good example and it helps with the quote a lot. Also, the WW2 and Hitler example went along with it too.
DeleteWhat Martin Luther King Jr. means when he says “Darkness cannot drive out darkness;only light can do that.Hate cannot drive out hate;only love can do that.” is that you can be mean or hateful and expect it to go away. Same thing with darkness is when your life might be horrible but looming over what the darkness is won’t help you get over it. You can relate this is situations we talk about in class is because most whites were blaming the blacks for america's problems. Then when they were doing this they were hating blacks to hoping to get rid of them all. The way this relates to the quote is almost self explanatory. It relates because people thought that if they had put their darkness and hate towards the blacks that it would go away but that wasn’t the case. What Martin Luther King Jr. was saying that we have to make a light to get through the darkness and how we should all love each other because that will get rid of our hate.
ReplyDeleteA perfect example of something that I can relate this quote to from history is when Hitler had started WW2 and tried to get rid of jews. The reason why this can relate is because when he started WW2 is because when Germany lost in WW1 and blamed the jews for their flaws.Example is because when they were broke and were destroyed had blamed the jews that they were making Germany weak. What hitler had looked for then a way out of the darkness by starting WW2 trying to gain Germany’s glory back from losing WW1. Also he had tried to get the hate out by taking it out on the jews and getting rid of all of them.this is how this quote takes part in history.
Also this quote kinda explains me. I think that if you hate your life and things around it that you shouldn’t take it out on others. I think its wrong to think that if you have darkness in your life that you should make everyone's else life dark. I just think that you should be nice to the people that deserve it.
What you have said is very well said with good arguments, especially the with dwelling with darkness when you are already in the dark. Some places need to be cleaned up and add a little more flavor to it, but other than that you did a pretty good job. I also think that light is our love, we shine our love upon the darkness and kill hate with our love.
DeleteMartin Luther King Jr. once said "Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that; hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that". I think this is a very inspirational quote because he used a metaphor. If you're in a dark room, you cannot make the darkness go away but adding for darkness. It simply wouldn't make sense. You would drive the darkness out by using light because light is obviously the only way to get rid of darkness. Hatred is very similar. If someone hates you, you cannot get rid of that hatred by hating them right back. To get rid of their hatred completely, you would have to learn to like or love that person because that is the only real way dispose of their hatred towards you. This could relate to some of the things we've discussed in class such as the play we recently finished reading, "Romeo and Juliet". In "Romeo and Juliet", there is a feud between two families, the Montegues and the Capultes. Both families have hated each other for almost as long as anyone can remember. In fact, the families hate one another so much that not even a death threat from the prince can stop their battling in the streets of Verona. But when two teenagers from each house fall madly in love with one another, they stop at nothing to keep them together, not even death. When the pair of star-crossed lovers eventually kill themselves so that they can be together, the prince punishes the two houses with letting all of them live with the fact that their silly feud caused the death of their two young family members. After reading this play, however, you can clearly see that if the two houses had just listened to the prince and had stopped fighting, then they would've still had Romeo and Juliet alive with them. But because they were too blinded by hatred to see the light that could be the end to their battle, they decided to keep fighting. If the families had just learned that the only way to end hatred is the learn to love the other person, they wouldn't have had to live with the fact that their fight was the thing that killed Romeo and Juliet.
ReplyDeleteWhat Martin Luther King Jr. meant by when he said “Darkness cannot be drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that”, was that you can’t get rid of hatred for something by adding more hatred to think it will make it better. Some people may think to get rid of hate or darkness that lies within them you add more to it so that you won’t feel it or think about it. The only thing that will do in reality is make you have more stress that lies on shoulders and will never leave if you keep on adding. There is a show that could relate to this quote in a way and the show is called Supernatural. It is about these two brothers named Sam Winchester and Dean Winchester and they fight anything that is demonic or ghosts that could try to hurt the human population. One type of the supernatural that they usually have to send to rest is a ghost or a demon. What makes these ghost present in some locations is possibly they hold on to something they can’t let go of or they have a lot of anger that they could never let go to make some places haunted. Sometimes if they were angry about something they would add more anger to make it go away but it will make them worse and have the infinite amount of stress. One topic that we described during class that can be related to this is the novel we read called “Romeo and Juliet”. In the book “Romeo and Juliet” these two families hate each other with their life and they always keep hating each other more and more until the two people that they loved were gone because of their grudge. The two families hated each other so much that it was common that the two would break out in absolute war but luckily the king would come just before all madness would go out of hand. Also, with these fights it would cause a handful of stress that would not go away unless the families settle something to stop the madness. Though sadly, that never happened through out the novel until the very end when they lose Romeo and Juliet. The morel of this quote is don’t get rid of hatred by increasing it with more, that will only make you closer to becoming crazy. If something bothers you talk to someone about it with someone or else you are going to be thinking on that through out the day. Even when you think that it might be gone just because you haven’t thought about it doesn’t mean that the thoughts won’t go away it will come back if you don’t take action. The more you keep thinking negative the more that it will be negative.
ReplyDeleteI agree because we both think hate wont make hate go way. I also agree that if you are angry you cant be more angry to make yourself happy. he also show good examples from Romeo and Juliet.
DeleteI agree because hate won't make hate go away it will make it worse not better. More of something won't make it better. You change and make your self better.
Delete“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr. What I think this quote means is that if someone does something really bad and you hate them, hating them wont help you forget about what happened. An example of this could be back many years ago when the whites and coloured people were seperated, or during a time of segregation. If something went wrong, the white people would blame the coloured for it because of their hatred for them. How I think this corresponds with the quote is because if we hate them, things will not get better. If we learn to forgive and love eachother, everthing will be better. Another great example of this quote was in the book “Romeo and Juliet” that we read in class. Both families hated eachother with a passion, and they didn’t learn to love eachother until the end of the book where Romeo and Juliet both killed themselves to be with eachother. An example of how this quote goes on in my life is that their was this person who I really hated and my hatred actually got so strong around this person that I coudn’t stand having them around me and I actually forgot why I hated them. I decided that hating this person wont do anything so I learned to love them and now we are pretty good friends. The beginning part of this quote makes a lot of sense for the actually meaning it is trying to tell. If you are in a dark room, will you really try to light it up with more darkness? The same thing goes with hate. If you hate someone, more hate for that person wont help you. You will need to forgive and stop hating that person and learn to love them. This quote can probably go with many of our lives, we all probably at one point really hated someone, and tried to solve that with more hate. If we just learned to love someone, silly fueds that we have will finally end.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Hating something you hate wont make yo stop hating it. it will only make you hate it more. NA din Romeo and Juliet they both did hate eachother. The families of course. But they did learn to love each other and that made all the hate to go away.
Delete“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” To me this quote means to change something that is bad and make it better. A person who shows hatred will only change when a person shows them love. When you show love it will let them realize that you are the bigger person and there are other ways to feel and behave. Once they see you are more mature they will understand that they are doing the wrong thing. The only thing that will end a war is peace. Adding more war to a war will not make it stop because it becomes a cycle getting worse and worse, it is the same thing with love and hate. Martin Luther King, in addition to all of his supporters, was able to change an entire nation simply with his speeches and by organizing marches. The Black Panthers had many of the same goals but tried to achieve them through violence and fear and I don’t think they accomplished anything and certainly no one remembers them. In the end racial equality made great strides just by simply opening people’s minds and starting a dialogue.
ReplyDeleteAnother widely honored and respected person, Mahatma Gandhi, achieved freedom for an entire country by simply demanding it through peaceful demonstrations and civil disobedience. India had been a colony of England until Mahatma Gandhi organized the Indians and showed everyone that there was another way to live, in freedom equally and happily. By being organized and professional you can settle a big argument or small disagreement in a civil way. As you can see Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. achieved a lot by making speeches and talking. While The Black Panthers go unremembered and forgotten without achieving anything. So you can tell that to make something better do not try to fix it with something worse. Only love will end a war, not more war. Being an organized and civil person will change the world in a positive way. The only way to make something brighter is with light not more darkness. Duh.
molly says something very clever in her blog. She says that adding more war to war will not make it stop. It think that is a 100 percent right. And that's exactly why I agree with her. She knows exactly what the quote means. And that's what I think it means too.
DeleteSometimes the only way we can stop things is by going at it in a completely different direction. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”- Martin Luther King, Jr. To me this means that if there is like you can't fight fire with fire it will only create a bigger problem. Say your friend is mad at you and she/he is depressed you wouldn't try to change how they feel by bringing up sad things that would upset then you would say good and funny things that would help cheer them up. We can relate this quote to topics/situations we have discussed in class dealing with segregation, hate, and misjudgment. In class we have talked about the book, The Help. In this book there is a bunch of discrimination and segregation. The colored people were frowned upon and looked down on by white people, but there were some white people who would try to help them not caring about what there skin color looked like. Instead of skeeter using darkness to retaliate against the darkness the colored people where put into, she used the truth. When we talked about Boo Radley everyone put him into darkness by spreading rumors and instead of actually trying to see what the truth was they spread more rumors. They created more drama when they could have shined a light upon him and get the truth out instead of just rumors. An example from a book is Romeo and Juliet. Both of their families hated each other so fiercely. They hated each other just because, they couldn't even remember the reason anymore. The feud went back threw the families to as far back as they could remember. They didn't realize what was happening till it was to late. The families child's fell in love with each other and weren't aloud to be together, it was a forbidden love. They ended up dying because their families couldn't understand that love would end everything instead of fighting hate with hate they could have loved each other and had everything be okay.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you full heartly and you made a lot of strong valid arguments and I believe that you and I Both agree on the facts .
Delete“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” What I infer from from this quote is that he is saying two wrongs don't make a right. The only way to fix something is by the truth or apologizing. Love can drive out hate but hate cannot drive out hate its a dark force ; its almost like saying ohy i hate you but i hate this person I no longer hate you.
ReplyDeleteMy mother once told me that there is never a reason to hate someone the only thing you can do apologize and try to fix and if they still want to be sticks in the mud then screw them they didn't deserve an apology and just let it roll off your shoulder. Basically saying no one is worth huffing and puffing of your shoulder. If the person really liked to be a mad person then screw them like honestly just don't waste your breath.
This is an forestance you date a girl for a year and you really like her almost love and you guys trade some pics and them BOOM! yall break up and you have the photos what do you do , do you send them to all your bros and or brother or post them on twitter and instagram and facebook and tag her; or do you delete them and ask her to delete them and never talk about them again.
The mature thing to do in this situation would be to delete them and let go and move because then you're filling your heart with love not hate . The more you fill it with hate the worse you are going to see what it caused to them. I believe everyone should delete them.
ReplyDeleteThe quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” was once said by a brave and brilliant man Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King said this meaning that you can't stop hate by hating more. You have to accept what's ever going on and not hate it. Hes comparing hate to darkness and love to light. Explaining that you can override hate by love. To me this quote means that you have to fix things you hate with acceptance. For example, if two people get in a fight, they can't keep hating each other. They have to compromise with each other and love or even like each other to solve the hate. Also this quote goes with the segregation we are talking about in class . It goes with segregation by the white people had to accept the african americans as people to fix all the conflict between the different races. This quote can relate to the show “Greys Anatomy”. In this show one of the doctors had a relationship with one of the nurses. But it turned out he had a wife that lives across the country. Even though he wanted to leave the wife because she cheated on him, he still hasn't divorced her, that still upset the nurse he was dating. So at the end of every thing they hated each other. But they couldn't hate each other they figured out because they worked together. They had to compromise with each other and not hate each other to avoid problems at work. They had to find ‘light’ in their ‘darkness’. So they are mutual right now to not make work hard for them. In conclusion, Martin luther king, a very smart man, once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” and that this quote means that you cannot stop hating something with hate. You have to give that person or thing a chance and accept it. Also that this quote can go with movies and peoples everyday life.
I agree with you Carly. Because what your saying is true. He is comparing hate to darkness and love to light. What saying is also true because if someone does get into a fight they to come to some kind of agreement to light the darkness that was filling in between them.
DeleteI agree with Carly because darkness signifies hate and light signifies love. Being evil towards someone who s just as bad to you will only make the problem worse.
Delete“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." This quote was said by the very famous man Martin Luther King Jr. To me I think this quote means that there will sometimes be negativity in your life, and your life will always be bad if you don't try to bring the positives into consideration. The second part" hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that" means that if you always envy people with their relationships or your constantly hating people or keeping grudges on people then more hate won't drive out for the other person you hate just because you started hating another person only love and friendliness can drive out the hate you have for people. This quote relates to what we were saying in class because we are talking about segregation and morality. Segregation was when the blacks and whites were separated from each other because white people thought black people weren't equal to them. Martin Luther Jr. helped the black people get the same equal rights as whites. Not all white people hated on the blacks. In "The Help" the book we read over the summer skeeter didn't hate the black peoples she liked them and wanted to help them. She found out that they were equal and that they were just unfortunate to have a different skin color. That situation relates to this quote because through the negative times in her life she found new maid friends and was very successful in her book she wrote with her friends.
ReplyDelete"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot not drive out hate; only love can do that." This quote was said by Martin Luther King Jr. This quote means a lot to people in reality. But to me it means that darkness can signify anger. For example if someone is angry, and another person who is angry is just going to cause more anger. If someone is angry a person who is happy or filled with light will drive that anger away. But when he says darkness its not only anger. It could be depression. If someone lost someone they love the most they'll be sad and depressed. That person can't be living off of depression so the person with light who is happy all the time will drive it away and the person who was sad and upset will hopefully feel better. Everyone in the world is filled with hate, even though they may not show it right then and there, they have hate. But there's that one person who is hateful all the time. And they have the right to be because they act like that because of what happen to them during their lifetime. But if that person is filled with hate, and they know someone who acts like them it's going to cause even more hate. That person need someone who can make them happy with love because that's the only way the hate will be drive out. That person needs love because without love their just going to have a bad life. If you think about it like this, people who has hate will not be respectful, will not care, and will not be thankful because they're to busy hating on things that they are forgetting how to be loved. This quote can relate to a movie. The movie Coach Carter Timo Cruz had a bad life. It was filled with darkness, Renny got shot and he lost him. So he went to the coach's house and asks if he can join the team. The light in his life was probably going back to the basketball team so he can get off the streets. That's how this quote relates to a movie and to me,
ReplyDeleteI disagree with the quote about depression because depression is a constant thing like your life is on the slope and it is not going to rise. Also depression happens when something very tragic happens. For example say your parents were just killed in a car crash that could be depressing but when you are already sad there is nothing to put on top of that
DeleteMartin Luther King Jr. once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” What this quote means is that hate and negativity cannot drive each other out , but sincerity and compassion can. For example, say someone is being bullied. Being violent and acting inappropriate towards the bully will only fuel his aggression, when it would just be easier to be kind. If you are kind to someone who is normally hostile towards you, sooner or later they will realize how stupid they look. While if you go back and forth with him itll only carry on the feud and make things worse. An other example of this logic by MLK could be used in basketball. Say the ref makes a bad call, the way you react controls the way the ref will call the game. If you act out in a rather aggressive and belligerent manner, you won’t receive as good of calls as the person whom reacts calm and composed to a bad call. If you react negative to a call, things will only get worse. But if you react positive and respectful, things will get better. You can control your demeanor. Bottom line is that negativitycannot drive out negativity, only old fashioned love can.
ReplyDeletei agree with what your sayong cause being bullies is bad . being vielent is even worse . you are correct about everything and eveything you saying
DeleteDarkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.
ReplyDeletei think he is saying that if you fight fire with fire , it causes more fire . but if you fight fire with water ( kindness) then everything will be easier. there wouldnt be as much conflict . everybody would be easier and happier . but sense thats not the case
like when i fight with my mom when i fight fire with fire i get no where but grounded and in trouble and thing taken away . but if i sit there and fight with what she says then i wont be in as much trouble . you cant have a whole bunch of him like yeah you're right mom i should of listen . or i should of made better choices and aggerce in this world or it will crash and burn and we will have too watch it do and then live in this way . he had a very good point anything that is happier is a better vibe . it give us a good vibe and thats what we need positive vibes
I personally agree with alexia. You cant fight fire with fire you need to use its opposite to fight it. You cant always win when u use the same thing against others. You will get absolutely no where with anyone or anything. You fight with the opposite and you start to get somewhere.
DeleteWhat does the quote "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." By martin luther king jr. Well i think that it means you cant drive something out by using the same thimg to get it out. Only something else usually the opposite of what is causing the problem. But i also think he ment the hate that the whites had for the blacks had at that time. That he ment the hate they had for each other would only change if love was substituted for hate. He didnt want the blacks tp hate the whites and the whites to hate the blacks. All that martin luther king jr. Wanted was for everyone to get along and live together as one. It is just like what we have been talking about in class. We have been talking about how the blacks and whites wouldnt get along with each other. How they had to go in separate doors, go to different schools, even sit on different levels of the ares in churchs. And martin luther king jr. Just wanted everyone to get along and share one thing for everyone. What movie or book have i seen or read that reminds me of this quote. Well i have seen the movie "The Help" and that movie has parts that remind me of the quote. There are parts where black people get beat up by the whites because they would say that the blacks arent as equal. Or that they have no rights or lesser rights then the whites. That is what i think the quote "darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." By Martin Luther King Jr. And is what movie or book reminds me of the quote.
ReplyDeleteMr. martin Luther king jr. has once said when he was still present in todays world that “darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that . hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” In my opinion this quote can mean many many different things but I interpreted it as him saying that being mad is not going to make you happy, not being mad is what makes a person happy. Hating someone or something will not make anything better but loving and making the most out of it will make the situation a lot better than if you stay mad or sad about it and hold a grudge. This quote can relate to our class because we have been talking about segregation. The people were always sad that they couldn’t do or use the same stuff as white people. Well instead of being mad about it why not be happy about it. They wanted to use those things even know the white people where so mean, nasty and cruel to them. I think this relates to me because in baseball if I make a bad play or something along those lines and get mad it will keep happening like a domino effect. If I forget about that play and leave it in the past instead of being angry it will not happen again. This quote relates in my opinion to the ninth grade summer reading book, the help. All of the African Americans where always so mad they could not do what the white people where doing with out being killed or locked up. I think they should have been happy about not being able to go activities that the white people where doing because why would you want to surround yourself around people that treat you like you are nothing and are complete crap. In my opinion you should not want to. I think everyone should think about the positives that come out of things instead of focusing on the down sides. I also think everyone should make the most out of circumstances because being mad and holing grudges will not fix the problem
ReplyDeleteI think the quote "“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” by Martin Luther King Jr. means that only by being nice to others you can get rid of the bad stuff in the world. It's kind of like "don't fight fire with fire". If someone's being mean to you, you shouldn't be mean to them also because it'll just make things worse. If people are being hateful you shouldn't be hateful back to them, because it doesn't make you the better person. This quote relates to the time period Martin Luther grew up in. People discriminated against different races on the daily and hate was a common thing shown towards them. Martin Luther had to deal with that kind of thing every day, but he wasn't hateful towards them because he knew that it wouldn't fix things. Instead he resorted to peaceful ways to change things. By not being hateful and encouraging others not to be hateful he used his "light" to drive out the "darkness" of racism. This relates to other situations, like when you're fighting with friends. If you guys keep fighting and being mean to each other then you're just going to end up hating each other more and not wanting to be friends again. If you stop hating the other and apologize though than you can stop fighting. I think this relates to the play Romeo and Juliet. In the play the Capulets and Montegues hated each other's family for no reason. They always fought and caused problems and the peopel from both sides of the families disliked each other without any reason to. This fighting led to the families not liking Romeo and Juliet being together because they were from different families. People from both sides fought over this problem, causing many people to die. Mercutio, Benvolio, and Romeo all fight Tybalt and Mercutio and Tybalt die because of it. Also when Romeo think Juliet is dead he kills himself, and when Juliet wakes up to find Romeo dead she kills herself also. This was all caused by the "hate" and "darkness" between the families.
